Chuck – We finally find out about all the Gretas

This episode of 'Chuck' could have sent the show down a very bad path, but thankfully it all worked out. Well, at least for now.

- Season 4, Episode 18 - "Chuck versus the A Team"

It seemed like Chuck as we knew it was finished this week. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. First, we had Casey keeping his assignment to a new team, the A-Team, a secret from Sarah and Chuck. Second, he was working with two GRETAs, which ended up being new intersects. I try to stay spoiler-free, so I didn’t see that reveal coming.

The idea that Chuck wouldn’t be the only intersect worried me, as it worried Sarah and Chuck. What would become of the Chuck world if he was no longer special? The show was messing with a working formula of a small family/team centered around Chuck and his team. Or, Chuck and Sarah … and Casey. I can relate to Casey’s desire to lead a team and his wanting to stop being a third wheel. But, he is an integral component of that team.

In the end, I was relieved that the intersect experiment failed. But, it doesn’t seem to be over with Chuck now the head of the project. For now, he is special and the only intersect, but for how long? Chuck’s supposed shortcomings according to Beckley, “His emotional sensitivity. His over-reliance on handlers. His inability to terminate targets.” appears to be what allows him to be so effective with the intersect.

I found it interesting that the GRETAs were mean and acted superior to Chuck when they were the intersects, but then when the intersect was removed, they were relieved. To see the confidence that the intersect provides to the host helps explain the “growth” of Chuck from the first season to now.

Where does Chuck go from here? Chuck is now head of the intersect project and Ellie has her father’s computer. I predict that this will all come to a head when Ellie figures out the computer and then finds out Chuck is still a spy. Will that be an explosive moment? By the end of the season, will Lester and Jeff be the only ones not involved or aware of the CIA presence at the Buy More?

Overall, I am more excited about the prospects for the remainder of the season than I was before this episode. It is a new world.

Other stuff:

  • How cute were Sarah and Chuck when they were working together? Their interactions and chemistry reminds me of the Harts from Hart to Hart. Loved that show.
  • “These have a camera inside of them that’ll scan for any bioresidue.” – Sarah
“Ugh! Sounds like a CBS show.” – Chuck
  • “Or I’ll put a bullet in that obsolete brain of yours.” – Vicki
  • “Chuck, are you about to disarm a nuclear bomb using fruit juice?” – Sarah
  • I didn’t like the scene when Ellie tried to use her looks to get Lester and Jeff to help find her computer. For some reason it made me very uncomfortable. But, I think that was the point. It was uncomfortable for her, but she knew it would be effective.
  • Looks like Bryce knew what he was doing when he picked Chuck to receive the intersect.

Fun episode, but I’m sad to see Old Spice Guy go.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he is back again. Same w/ Stacy Keibler.
