I suppose one thing to be said for last night’s series finale of Greek is that it put to bed any lingering questions we’ve had about where the show was heading this season. Not that it answered most of them, but in the sense that there’s no longer anything that the show can do with the story lines, it’s become a moot point.
I want to be clear about something: I will miss this show. I’ve enjoyed it since the beginning, and to one extent or another I became invested in many of the characters who have come and gone as the story’s unfolded.
I think I liked Rusty better as the wide-eyed nerd he was when he first came to CRU. There are things he’s done as the show has progressed that have been so out-of-character that at times I’ve wondered if he hadn’t become an entirely different person. Which he shouldn’t have; I think the show realized that right around the time they threw the science grant at him.
I was proud of the way he finally stood up as the new KT president. That is, when he rallied the troops at the end of the episode and promised to find them a new house. His lame attempt at standing up to Lasker Parkes (Jonathan Silverman) was embarrassing. And Rusty and Ashleigh ending up together? Not only would I have never bet on that when the show premiered, but that’s wrong for so many reasons.
Cappie’s awesome. His philosophy “final” — first of all, he studied all night for that? And second, finals already? — was a cheesy way to sum up his time (and ours) at CRU, but I love that his chapter came to an end last night. And I was proud of him, and the way he felt ready to hand off KT president to Rusty. I was excited to learn his real name — Captain John Paul Jones … who’d have guessed that Cappie wasn’t just a nickname — but I realized that it hadn’t been milked quite like Kramer on Seinfeld; I didn’t even remember that we didn’t know it.
I hate to say it, but I think that Cappie could do a lot better than Casey. I really was a fan of hers for a long time, but ever since she woke up midway through a career drive — there was zero organic progression to her story — she’s been too much to deal with. I don’t at all understand why she thought that she couldn’t quit being Professor Segal’s (Josh Randall) research assistant without jeopardizing her law school career, and I also don’t understand how then it did affect her law school career. Her admission to law school wasn’t contingent on her having a job; the research assistant position was an honor, not a requirement. Quitting might have soured things with Segal, but that’s the extent of it.
Which also means that Casey wasn’t being strong by leaving school and going off into the great unknown … she was being stupid. Just because Segal made an idiot of himself with the line “Your legal career hangs in the balance right now,” that doesn’t mean that Casey couldn’t have just gone right along with the rest of her education. I don’t get it.
Evan and Cappie ended things on good terms, although again I have no understanding of what was up with Evan this season. It feels like he traveled a long road to have ended up where he was a year ago, so what was the point of the journey? Plus I almost wish that they’d ended things still hating one another … don’t you now want to spend more time watching them hang out? I feel like we were given a gift only to have it snatched away from us as soon as we wanted to use it.
Calvin’s season-long build toward a major and a future went absolutely nowhere with his deciding to go to India for a semester. And what about Heath and medical school? Did he forget about that? Calvin was such a strong character, and he had so many things happening in his life. It’s strange for his story to be slapped together so haphazardly.
The last thing I wanted was for my final glimpse of Daley to be of him teamed up with Rebecca. I’m glad that he found happiness with Laura (Aynsley Bubbico), but that’ll be the last that we see of Clark Duke as an innocent religious guy. I’ll miss him. But what a way to end it — he got his kiss with Casey!
It was nice to see some old faces return for the rally: Wade (Derek Mio), Jen K. (Jessica Rose), Lucky Lisa Lawson (Arielle Vandenberg) … it was no “calling all hands” parade, which the rally would have been a great occasion for, but it was nice.
In the end there were definitely some solid send-off moments, but not only did this not feel like a series finale — it could have better served as a finale for the graduating seniors, who were leaving the rising juniors behind for another two years — it also wasn’t a very good episode. I’m glad I have three other seasons to look back on, because these final ten episodes weren’t worthy of the series that Greek once was.
Either way, the show will be missed.
I’m not gonna lie, after I finished watching this I was like “I need the review… I have COMMENTS!!!”
1. Wasn’t Heath supossed to graduate like 2 semesters ago? I know he failed his finals after wade, what’s-his-face, and what’s-his-nuts got kicked out, but wasn’t he supossed to graduate too? Where did that story line go?
2. I agree with you. Leaving CRU at this point was probably the dumbest thing Casey has done. Really? Even if you needed an internship to graduate, there is NOWHERE else you could have looked.
3. Rusty clearly didn’t think his plan through. KT has no money, which is where all these problems started in the first place… So let’s just go buy a new house.
4. I understand they only have so much time to pull everything together, but I didn’t like how Casey was all like “it’s cool if you date my brother.” And then next scene is “hey rusty, make out with me.” Although I do have to give props to the acting of rusty during the whole episode, he was phenom despite some awkward dialog.
5. Best parts of the episode: the quote when rusty says “you can’t fault luke skywalker for being darth vader’s son” and then in the background someone yells “spoiler alert!” I just died. And probably entirely unintentional but if casey and cappie get married her name would be “casey jones” which is an awesome TNMT shout out and totally made my night.
If I can think of anything else I’ll come back.

1. I think Heath did come back two semesters ago … not sure what he’d said he needed to fulfill, but he could have failed two classes and taken one per semester. But I agree, it’s weird that med school wasn’t mentioned at all when he said he was going with Calvin to India. Great nicknames for the forgotten three, by the way!
3. I agree the plan isn’t quite thought out, but technically Rusty could solicit all old KT brothers from every college under the sun for money. Wouldn’t that be a fun story to have followed in another season – crazy fund raising road trip!
4. Agreed. The Ashleigh/Rusty thing was rushed from the moment they started falling for one another.
5. Great line! I felt like there was too much context necessary for me to quote it, but I’m glad you got it in here. Thanks! :)
I find it funny there was a snow storm with leaves on a tree, and I thought they said it was midterms, but whatever the ending was great. i will really miss this show but thankful for the last 10 episodes we got, they were mainly a lot of fun.
I think you are being way too critical for the episode, it was great. it was a new beginning type ending and I love those. West Wing did it perfectly, and Greek did it well.
Calvin had a lot going for him? Since when? All he ever did was have sex, we really didn’t know anything about him personally. So now he is going to go find himself like Cappie’s speech on life
Heath was great as always, they always give him the best lines. I love when he shouted “Does it matter which virginity you lost?!”
The house is gone, but I’m sure there is a way to get money and start anew, I can picture 20 guys living in a two bedroom apartment, maybe even Rusty’s place.
I enjoyed the ending. It’s probably not what I would have done, I would have kept the seniors away after last season, but it was still loads of fun and that’s what the show always was.

You’re one to talk about being too critical! :)
In the end I think I expected a lot from a show that’s disappearing almost inexplicably. I know “ratings, blah, blah, blah,” but I mean it hasn’t felt like it was drawing to a close, and nothing about the story itself — half the characters are in the middle of school — lends itself to a natural conclusion. So I expected a big bang to compensate; I feel like we got nothing.
I’ve loved Greek, and I know you’ve been critical of it this season, but for the most part I thought it was just nitpicking.
However, the series finale terribly disappointed me. A law professor, at one of the “top law schools,” is so unprofessional that he intentionally gathers two ex-Greek presidents to put on his case, despite KNOWING they will have a conflict of interest? Especially considering he used to date her best friend, so he knows Cappie is her boyfriend? I’m no lawyer, but don’t most people in the legal profession avoid instances like this? (I know a judge would recuse himself…do lawyers do similar things?)
However, this being said, Casey’s law school wouldn’t necessarily be over because she took a semester off. She could conceivably go back, although the show would have us think that Ms. Can’t Do Her Hair Without A Plan drove off into the sunset with Cappy, without jobs, living arrangements or any other plans in motion. Very uncharacteristic.
As for Rusty & Ashleigh together – meh. They had no chemistry, but I didn’t care one way or the other.I didn’t care for how the writers felt the need to pair everyone up…because it’s not possible to be single and have a happy ending?
And the backdrop behind the destroyed KT house was…awful. And the plot line itself was questionable. I’d poke holes into it up one side and down the other, but at this point, I want to remember it fondly. So I’ll do my best to forget the horrid parts of the finale and remember the good ‘ol days, especially with Wide-Eyed Spitter in season 1!

I thought it was also crazy that Lasker was acting like Casey and Evan were his attorneys. What was that about? And lawyers absolutely recuse themselves as well; it’s expected.
Wide-eyed Spitter (and Dale hanging the Confederate Flag) will live forever! :)
