What a good episode of Desperate Housewives this week! I’ve been complaining about the Gaby stuff with Grace and the constant Tom and Lynette issues every other week, but this episode was really firing on all cylinders. It had drama, comedy, great moments from the secondary characters and an ending that I really did not see coming.
Everyone learned something about themselves this week, but the lessons were never heavy-handed. Gaby learned that a parent can appreciate their child even with their imperfections; Bree learned not to dwell on what she’s lost but to focus on giving to others in need; Lynette learned she was a good mother while Renee learned she wasn’t mother material at all; and Susan learned her condition had taken a turn for the worst so she had to appreciate each day she was given – even while Mike was silently falling to pieces.
I’m really glad Gaby has gotten back to her old self, and her little rivalry with Lee over whose daughter would do better at the school talent show was amusing. Lynette learned she could never leave her children in the care of Renee after a babysitting job went off the rails, as Renee got a last minute date and took the baby with her to the same restaurant Lynette and Tom were at. Bree had one of the best scenes of the night with Rev. Sikes (who had the best dialog), and her brunch to lure the neighbors into captivity — so they would all have to be tested for donor compatibility with Susan — also had some great lines from the secondary characters.
The big bang of the night, literally, involved Beth Young. After Paul threw her out, she returned to the house as if nothing had happened; but as the conversation turned to betrayal, when he learned Felicia Tillman was her mother, he blurted out that he did kill Beth’s aunt just so she would feel as betrayed as he. Armed with this information, Beth tried to get back in her mother’s good graces, but without any real evidence, Felicia just told her she was worthless and to never bother her again. In a surprising twist, Beth and Bree were both perfect matches for Susan (I don’t think it’s any surprise that Bree was a match), but Bree insisted on helping her friend, not realizing just how low a point Beth was at; but Beth gathered herself together, filled out the paperwork, went to the hospital, turned in the paperwork … and promptly shot herself in the head. I figured Beth would go behind Bree’s back, but I never expected her to kill herself (and in the same way Mary Alice Young did).
How will Wisteria Lane react to Paul’s second wife taking her own life? Will Felicia go completely off the deep end? She’s certainly not blameless for Beth’s state of mind, but she’s still a mother who has now lost two loved ones to Paul Young. I’m kind of thinking that Paul isn’t going to make it to another season if Felicia either finds a means of escape from jail or somehow gets in touch with Zack to finish what he tried to do a few weeks ago. Whatever happens, it’s not going to end well for Paul.
