Well, you knew it was going to be crazy even at the hint of Dean and Sam winding up inside of the Supernatural TV show. But wow, it was even crazier than expected. It’s not completely foreign territory for the show. Over the years there have been a number of rather goofy comic episodes. And this one really stands well next to the time the boys discovered Chuck’s books (“The Monster At The End Of This Book“), and when they went to the convention (“The Real Ghostbusters“).
As with those earlier adventures, this one also brought more than a few shots at the Supernatural of our universe. Even though there was a pretty important development where the war for Heaven was concerned, the real treat here came in all of those gags referencing the show. There were so many, I don’t even know where to start. Fake Robert Singer (Brian Doyle-Murray) was hilarious, and his scene with fake Eric Kripke (Micah Hauptman) was awesome. Front page of Variety.
Poorly named Jensen and Polish Jared were a treat as well. Their fish out of water gag worked wonderfully. From the makeup, to examining the props, to the ill-fated getaway in the Impala, it was all good. My favorite bit of it came in the awkward meeting with the otter loving Genevieve Padalecki. “Ruby?” It was all just so awkward. And that really only scratches the surface. There were jokes about the ratings, and Sera Gamble taking over running the show. It all made for an episode that was very fun for fans. The only thing missing was bizarro world Becky (Emily Perkins).
As for the bigger picture, two things really stood out to me. First, Sebastian Roché is awesome as Balthazar. I do hope we’ll be seeing him again when this all comes to a head. And second, while it is great that Castiel now has the weapons, why didn’t he just destroy Raphael (Lanette Ware) right then and there? Ya know, other than the fact that we’re only fifteen episodes into the season. It is, after all, a war for Heaven, not a tickle fight. Despite that curious decision, it does set things up well for the battle to come. That, plus the return to the wall in Sam’s head, should make for an exciting run to the finale.

loved the episode, tons of lol moments!!!
As is expected, Supernatural knocked another self-referential comedy episode out of the park
Side note: The title of the episode made me go watch Blazing Saddles on Netflix. Still a classic
Finally catching up on my Supernatural episodes and this one was terrific! I think my favorite part was Misha Collins, the actor and his tweets. Have you seen his real tweets? They’re pretty out there sometimes. And acknowledging Jensen’s earlier career on “Days of Our Lives” (and getting a clip from the show to boot) was great. Wonder why there was no mention of Jensen being married as well?
My boyfriend actually caught a joke in the title. “The French Mistake” is the song sung in Blazing Saddles right before the cowboys literally break the 4th wall.
