Parks and Rec – It’s not cheating if you’re already broken up

Relationships are blooming and dying, but something smells like rotten Chinese food on 'Parks and Recreation.'

- Season 3, Episode 6 - "Indianapolis"

I love the addition of Rob Lowe and Adam Scott to the cast, but I’m wondering how it’s going to be sustained. Due to the nature of their jobs and the reason they came to Pawnee in the first place, they should be there on only a temporary basis. Chris has already gone back to Indiana, and while Ben is staying to oversee the Harvest Festival, that’s going to be happening shortly, so we need reasons for them to stay/come back.

Unfortunately for Ann, she’s not going to be a reason for Chris to come back. I knew ahead of time that they were going to break up in the first few episodes, but I had no idea how he would do it. This? This is perfect. The combination of Ann never having been dumped and Chris being so unrelentingly positive made for an absolutely hilarious break-up. I totally thought he was going to end up being married or something. A guy like that needs to have a deep, dark secret.

Seeing Ben become part of the gang was pretty great too. It still cracks me up that Adam Scott (who is very, very hot, as I may have pointed out before) is seen as some sort of sad-sack. When Leslie was asking Tom to make sure Ben came out, it was more of a, “hey, let’s make the sad loser happy” thing instead of a, “let’s make this super-hot guy who I would like to bone happy” thing. The snail’s pace at which he and Leslie are moving seems to be reason enough to get him to stay in Pawnee. He’s part of the group now too, having taken a major bullet for Tom, so that’s something.

Parks and Recreation is really better than it’s ever been. This show has been on a steady incline ever since it premiered, and I laughed a lot during this episode. Even as a lifelong vegetarian, I was horrified when I saw those portobello mushrooms on the grill – even I know that’s bullshit. I just wish we could have had a quick shot of Ron eating all of the diner’s bacon and eggs. Have you seen the size of a restaurant egg carton? And a place that serves breakfast all day? That’s a visual I 100% need.

Seeing April and Andy in a relationship is also kind of cute. They both have the maturity level of a ten-year-old, so they’re pretty evenly matched. Giving back the tips at the end of the night was a nice touch as well. What was your favorite part of the episode?

Actually, as a person who’s very much a fan of a thick juicy porterhouse, I like grilled portobello mushrooms, not as a meat replacement, but if you chop it up after grilling it, it’s a pretty good side.

But I must agree, I look forward to Parks & Rec even more than 30 Rock now, with Community being on top. There’s just so many awesome things they can do with the characters.

I love grilled portobellos too, but I’m not Ron Swanson.
