I really enjoyed last night’s episode of Modern Family, but I feel kind of awkward saying that, considering that Jesse Tyler Ferguson called out “cranky TV bloggers who post the next day” on Twitter. Even though I’m not trying to prove that I’m not a cranky TV blogger, writing my review feels a little weird now. So, let’s just move on.
Jay’s karaoke machine gift to Gloria was really a gift to us all. I don’t know why, but her terrible singing amused me to no end. Maybe it was just the joy on her face as she was doing it, but I could have watched way more. In fact, she was my favorite part of this episode. The whole “boobs in the face thing” during the haircut was a little too “sitcom-y,” but her and Phil’s overall interactions were amazing. “I kill you!” The combination of their cluelessness (hers being due to the language barrier and his due to … being Phil) makes for some really fun interactions.
The way that Phil and Claire separately pieced together the parts of their fight was really well done, especially how they still came to separate conclusions. Gloria’s assessment of, “You do everything wrong. I don’t know why she talks to you!” sounded right on the money to me. Generally the “clueless husband” role is annoying because it’s always painfully obvious why the wife is mad, but in this case, Phil’s confusion made total sense.
In the end though, all of the marital spats were pretty low-stake, since everyone has such a strong marriage. Luckily, the writers manage to make it interesting, which is tough to do when we all know how it’s going to end. Of course Mitch saves the day for Cam, but he wasn’t a superhero about it. After all, he still didn’t manage to pack the house. Jay and Gloria resolved their differences, but it was Manny who had to make it happen. Also, I like badass Manny. He should show up more often.
