There aren’t a lot of writers clever enough to keep a joke about a name change going for 13 straight episodes, but Cougar Town has done just that. Not only did they stick with the quippy little title joke — Do we have to do this joke forever? Cougar Town — but they stuck a brilliant reference to it right into the episode tonight:
“Why me? Why do you want to torture me with your filthy stories?” – Jules
“You used to be one of us. Stalking young prey without mercy or shame.” – Barb
“When are people going to understand? That’s not who I am anymore. What do I have to do? Change my name?” – Jules
So to Aryeh and his ilk, I say: This is why we watch and love Cougar Town.
That and Jules trying to out her hiding friends by tempting them with a wine break. And the fact that they were playing Sardine Can Hide and Seek in the first place.
And the recurring penny can, always funnier than the last time the gang played.
And Andy’s shameless man-crush on Bobby, demonstrated this week when he saw Ellie in Bobby’s shirt: “Yeah, I’ve had this dream.”
And Ellie. Oh, Ellie. I don’t know which was funnier tonight, your sex chopsticks or the note you left for Andy on the pillow: “Kissing is for shavers.”
Some people are a bit worried about what Cougar Town‘s ratings are going to look like this week, without a new episode of Modern Family for a lead-in. For a show that people either love or hate, my bet is that all of the lovers tuned in, Modern Family or not. And we’ve already got another season coming, so no matter what happens tonight, we’ve still got more Cougar Town to enjoy.

I gave this show 3 episodes when it premiered. I lost interest. I gave it another look this year, a few months ago. I still found it filled with smug people hanging around doing nothing sharing in-jokes that weren’t funny, but smelled vaguely like the worst seasons of “Scrubs”. People’s love for this show and “Parks and Recreation” are the two biggest mysteries for me. I’ve given that show a number of tries, too, and I can’t find anything even amusing about it.
And I do like comedies. Currently, “Community” and “Modern Family” are my favorites. Also, although more uneven, “The Big Bang Theory” and “30 Rock”. Some of my all-time favorites: “Frasier”, “Cheers”, “Better Off Ted”, first 8 years of “The Simpsons”, “Fawlty Towers”, “Arrested Development”, much of “Everybody Loves Raymond”.
I don’t know why I just don’t click with “Cougar Town” or “Parks”. I’ve tried.

I’m right there with you on Parks, though I haven’t tried it recently and everyone says it’s gotten much better.
Other than Simpsons, BBT and Raymond, our favorites match so it’s interesting you haven’t clicked with CT. But I agree that it’s not for everyone and it seems to be a very polarizing show.
I hated the first season of Parks and Rec, but really like it now. It found it’s groove, toned down Poehler and really solidified the ensemble. With Rob Lowe and Adam Scott added as regulars this season, I think it will only get better.
