Maybe I’m just getting weird because this show is coming to an end, but didn’t you expect more from Medium‘s penultimate episode? I know they were officially canceled pretty recently, but we’ve had several episodes this season that seemed like we were gearing up for the end; this, however, was not one of them.
In fact, it seemed like an ordinary episode that could have happened earlier this season, or even in another season. There was no Lee, hardly an Devalos, and I’m pretty sure the entire Dubois family has forgotten that they even had another daughter. It’s been weeks since we’ve heard a peep about Ariel, and I was kind of surprised when we didn’t see her or at least hear from her after her mother had been kidnapped. I mean, I understand that she’s not going to school close by, but I feel as though a kidnapping would warrant at least an email. Or a text. Or, hell, a Facebook message? A tweet? Something.
I do find it interesting that this is really the first mention we’ve had of letters being sent to Allison. Aside from the brief job shakeup, we really haven’t seen many repercussions of her being outed in the press. Sure, every once and a while a victim or someone will recognize her, but we never really got to see how else it affected her life. Probably because they didn’t want to change the show too much. After all, if we saw the actual progression, we wouldn’t have Medium, we’d have The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. And that’s way more terrifying than any serial killer.
Speaking of which, I wasn’t in love with this week’s mystery. The baby-stealing story has been done to death, and this didn’t really put a new or interesting twist on it. A husband killing his wife has been done to death too, but it’s the new angles that keep all of those procedural shows in business. This storyline didn’t have that.
The Joe/Marie storyline was kind of dull as well: it centered around an algorithm for Christ’s sake. Do you know why The Social Network was successful? Because they didn’t waste time on any of the algorithms associated with Facebook. Because that’s boring.
This basically felt like a weird filler episode to me, and while I’m excited to see how they wrap up the series next week, the show really deserves a better sendoff than this.
