Cougar Town – Diet Dr. Pepper is unbelievably satisfying

'Cougar Town' returns with a new episode showcasing Jules as the angel of death, Laurie as a master of the art of ordering coffee and a lot of Diet Dr. Pepper.

- Season 2, Episode 11 - "No Reason To Cry"

As I spent the first weekend of the new year trying to save a days old rat that was intended as snake food (and failed), I can understand Jules’ sadness at the death of some wild animals. My pinkie is even in a box in the trash with some adult rat food that he never got to eat and “RIP Pinkie” written on side in black marker. I should shut up now.

This is the second show this week in which a bird suffered a death blow by slamming into a solid object (the first being Parenthood). Is this a coincidence in light of recent events? What does it mean? Frankly, I am flummoxed. And, I like alliteration. We lost Grayson Dove, Tuffie L’Rue and a lizard thanks to Jules, the angel of death. And, in the end, she even banged her head right into the virtual frying pan for a satisfying giggle. That it was the death and funeral of a trio of critters that finally persuaded Grayson to tell Jules he loved her was very fitting to the spirit of Cougar Town.

We’ve finally learned the secret to Bobby’s golfing skill. A mind like a blank slate. What takes his mind off of the horrors of the world that Kirsten so unwittingly planted in his head? Why, nothing other than the fizzing white noise of an unbelievably satisfying Diet Dr. Pepper. I’m wondering how many people will be screaming and hollering about the uber blatant product placement. The idea, to get Diet Dr. Pepper to sponsor Bobby for his comeback tour was great, but I hope people were able to see past the actual product placement to the intention of the bit.

I was very happy to hear that I am not the only one who finds the branding of coffee sizes to be a little less than easy to understand. Tall, Grande and Venti? I have never understood the reasoning behind three sizes that could all mean the same thing, and I still feel like an idiot when I ask for a venti soy caramel macchiato. When Ellie ordered a largie, she was woefully upstaged by Laurie’s order of a non-fat teeny tiny with a shot of yum. I wish I had the patience to type out Laurie’s incredible order at the end of the episode, because it was brilliant and made sense in her nonsensical way.  You gotta love it! (UPDATE: here’s a video of Laurie’s order, if ABC doesn’t pull it:)

Not an episode to blow me away, and I’m not feeling Kirsten the interloper, but “No Reason to Cry” did give me a few reasons to break into a smile.
