Bob:
It’s starting to be repeat season on TV. Boo! That does mean one thing though: new midseason shows are just around the corner and I’m looking forward to a few of them. I’ve complained about No Ordinary Family, so I’m hoping that The Cape fills that superpower void in my television life. It certainly seems like it has some potential, but then again, it is on NBC, so I’m curbing my enthusiasm.
There is one returning NBC show I’m looking forward to: Parks and Recreation. Last year the show was so much better than its first season and I thought it really found its voice. They toned down Amy Poehler’s character and stopped trying to be another Office. It may not be able to compete with my current Thursday favorites Community and 30 Rock, but I’m definitely excited.
Finally, there’s V. Yes, the episode count got cut down to a mere 10, which doesn’t speak well for its future, but I kind of dig the show. It’s certainly not the brainiest fair on television, but if you can turn your mind off and just enjoy the fun aliens, it’s a great ride. I’m looking forward to seeing what the show has in store for us this year, and as always, I’ll be happy to see Elizabeth Mitchell back on my TV.
Debbie:
Repeat season is just fine with me this year … I’m looking forward to finishing the most recent season of BBCA’s Being Human and perhaps some episodes of The Good Wife as well. Stop nagging!
I’ll definitely tune into The Cape to see what it’s all about, but there really isn’t much more new stuff that I’ll be checking out. I was thinking I’d give Chicago Code a try, but then I couldn’t remember what it was. I just went and watched the trailer and now I have no idea why I was going to give that show a try. A gritty cop show in the spirit of The Shield is just not my cup of tea.
However, I love White Collar and Leverage (although I think we only get three more episodes of that one) so I’m glad that they’ll be returning soon.
Bob:
Three episodes? Seriously? That’s some bizarre scheduling if you ask me.
I can understand Chicago Code not being for you, but I’m surprised that you want to check out The Cape. I’ve never known the superhero drama to be your genre of choice.
Debbie:
Yeah, Leverage gave us a very long summer season and left only three episodes for the winter. I’m expecting them to be awesome, though — the first one is Wil’s and the last two are the two-part finale. Should be a good time.
I liked the first season of Heroes and I love The Incredibles, Bolt, Iron Man (only the first one, good God….), and I really do try to like the others. But really, my love for TV superheroes was fostered by Lois and Clark, a show I still adore and would re-watch in a heartbeat. OK, L&C had a bit of an Alias thing there (I like pretending the last two seasons didn’t happen) but it was so special for most of it. I really think I’d like Smallville too (I catch a bit of it before Supernatural at times and like what I see) but I can’t catch up on the umpteen million seasons at this point.
Bob:
I’m chuckling here for a couple of reasons. First, I’m recalling your obsession for Lois and Clark, which was so very cheesy. You may like to know, however, that the series is available to stream through Netflix right now. I’m also laughing a bit because you listed Alias as a superhero show. I admit, Sydney Bristow could kick some ass, but she was most certainly not a superhero.
Debbie:
No, I know Alias wasn’t a superhero show … I compared it to L&C because the last couple of seasons of both sucked. And maybe cheesy is where it’s at — I’ll take it over all the angsty new Batman crap any day. Which reminds me how much I completely love The Brave and the Bold….
Does human target count as a midseason show???
the only one that i’m actually happy to see back is white collar, love some eye candy with brains!!! :)
Deb could easily pick everything to take on a lonely island for me I think :-)
(except Burn Notice. Boo! ;-) )
The only reason I didn’t mention BN is b/c I’m (as of last night) 3 episodes behind! I’ll catch up when other stuff goes on hiatus, though … I guess I should have mentioned that! :-)
V and Ride-A-Long (… Chicago Code).
Leverage’s three episodes plain don’t count :).
I’m very leary about the Cape. The 5 minute preview really turned me off, and I can’t stand Lyons. But, there’s David Keith, and well, Summer and Miko.
Oh, and Off the Map.
Maybe the holiday break will enable me to clear some of the 64 hours of fall backlog off of my DVR. Nah, probably not.
I don’t think I’ve ever watched a show that starts off as promisingly, and ends its first half season as disappointingly, as No Ordinary Family. I’m talking Kyle XY season 3 levels of badness, here. Even Heroes made it to season 2 without suckage.
Bob, I agree with all your choices, except I rate Parks & Recreation far above Community and every other episode of 30 Rock. And although it won’t salve TSCC‘s wound, I am very much looking forward to The Cape, even if NBC can’t launch a new show to save it’s life, literally. Even if it’s awful, Keith David (Goliath! And a completely different person from David Keith, Dorv) can make anything fun to watch. Plus I actually liked the preview.
We’ll have to see if V can retain any momentum this year without the benefit of the four-month break in the middle and multiple creative changes. BTW, it’s “brainiest fare,” not “brainiest fair.”
If Debbie can count Leverage, I can count the Eureka and Warehouse 13 Christmas specials. As for the rest, I want to see Caprica,, the Being Human remake, White Collar, Archer, Pretty Little Liars, and Fairly Legal, because of Sarah Shahi and Michael Trucco.
Finally, Debbie, if you do watch Smallville, you should be aware that it morphs into an almost completely different show called “Metropolis” around the time Gough & Millar leave the series. In fact, you could just watch those seasons, since knowledge of the previous show isn’t really necessary, and can be at times contradictory to what happens on the new show.
Eureka is another show that I regret not watching b/c I think I’d really like it, but we recently got the screeners for those 2 Christmas episodes, so we’ll be writing about them for sure! I enjoy the fluffy fun of Warehouse 13 most of the time; just love Claudia and what a sap she is for her W13 family.
Good to know about Smallville … it somehow seems less daunting!
Keith David :)
Duh!
Nice catch!
Dorv = Dumb
I’m looking forward to see Summer Glau on a weekly basis again and hope she’ll have lots of success with The Cape.
I like the Circus angle, as it’s where he learns his skills.Think of the heroes who have been involved with the circus or were trained there.Robin, Hawkeye and Nightcrawler. He also gets his mask during the second episode.
The Cape looks amazing.. It’s like batman with a bit of zorro thrown in.. It’s nerdy awesome
I’m not a huge comic book person and though The Cape definitely has the look and feel of a comic, it didn’t overdo it.
I think it might be confusing for viewers to see everywhere that The Cape premieres Sunday, January 9th, even if it’s correct.
Some could believe that The Cape airs on Sunday wich is not correct; its regular time period is Monday.
A better (if shorter) annouce in my opinion should be :
The Cape premieres with a two-hour episode on Sunday, January 9th .The following day (Monday) they repeat both the pilot and the 2nd episode with new episodes starting in its regular time period on Monday, January 17th.
Guys… Having seen a bit of the Cape, I hope you’re not overly disappointed.
Because I was overly disappointed.
How so? I was kinda looking forward to watching this with my boys. Can you describe the warts?
Summer Glau in a much more adult role…no craziness, and get’s to kick some ass too? And that’s just the hero support? Sounds like this could be a show with some legs of it’s own if the writing is good and consistent. The Cape is showing potential already. January 9? I’m there
Some says The Cape sounds too cheesy.
Actually, I find the cheese encouraging. Heroes cardinal sin was running away from its basic premise: Superheroes. I have bad news
for those who want to “mainstream” the superhero genre: people like the gimmicks. The alter egos. The colorful costumes. The goofy
pun-laced banter. The fact that they chose the CAPE, the ultimate symbol of super-heroic unreality, shows they learned their
lesson.
