Life Unexpected – All your secrets are belong to Thanksgiving

Leave it to Thanksgiving to bring all of the secrets to light. Who needs musical episodes when you've got holiday episodes that get you to the same place in the end?

This week, I’m playing a little catch up on all of the CW shows that life got in the way of. Fortunately for the boys and girls back, home, catching up on Life Unexpected only involves “Homecoming Crashed.” Not that a lot happened, or anything (that phrase is accompanied by air quotes, for the record, as is the next one, if you’re scoring at home). Or that any of our character’s lives has changed much since waking up on Thanksgiving.

Quick thoughts on last week: Wow, gasp, sigh. BIG sigh. Less big sigh … OK, but seriously folks, I finally got my answer on the big secret as to what happened to Lux at Victoria’s, saw that Tash has one heck of a back swing, and Sam has the goods on Lux and Eric. Which, if we are all very lucky, take our vitamins, and drink our milk, means the eventual crash landing that is the end of this storyline.

I think that Thanksgiving, as a background for a television episode, is almost as clichéd as the sum whole of ’80s sitcoms. The minute Cate confirmed that Ryan wouldn’t be at Thanksgiving dinner, you had to know that events would conspire to put him at that table. Throw in some ex’s that don’t know about the not-so-ex’s and fun little daddy/boss dynamic, and you’ve got some great, mashed potato based fun. Oh, and all of those secrets? Yeah, you can kiss those all goodbye.

The one secret I thought would come out eventually was that this was Emma’s second dalliance with a Bazile man. Actually, though, considering how Baze’s father has actually become a more sympathetic character over time, I’m actually glad to see that he turned out not to be a scumbag (Because you know he’s not wrong about Baze dating his boss, even if the reaction could have been … better).

If you can’t tell, I’m losing a little faith in this show in general, but in particular, a lot of it is Lux. If she was this self-centered and selfish last season, frankly, I don’t remember it. Trying to tip toe around the dating-your-teacher storyline for a minute, let’s just examine how she guilted Tash into covering for her once, and let Sam do the same the night of Homecoming. Hopefully, now that the proverbial poo is hitting the wind machine, she’ll appropriately step up to the plate.

Notes & Quotes

  • Yes, that’s a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reference in the excerpt, but not necessarily an insult … calm down there, tiger.
  • “It’s Mr. Daniels. How surprising … [under his breath to Lux] and yet not.” – Sam about Eric and Lux … Sharing my thoughts exactly
  • If there’s a running joke on this show that I love, it’s the fact that Cate can’t cook.
  • But spitting wine all over the turkey, that’s something I hope they never let Cate forget!
  • “I spit on Thanksgiving, Ryan.” – Cate

Hey at least after “Once More With Feeling” none of the show regulars signed on for a CBS pilot… :-D
