Hellcats – The one that got away

I'm single, I've never been married and have had countless failed relationships. Through them all, there is one that got away who stands as my yardstick. Seems I'm not alone.

- Season 1, Episode 10 - "Pledging My Love"

My two favorite scenes in tonight’s show were most definitely the dance numbers. Even though the episode was directed by Debbie Allen, she didn’t choreograph the dance sequences, but you know she influenced the decision to include them. One quite obviously was a dream, as Marti struggles with what occurred between her and Dan, and the other was all about Derrick in his attempt to woo Vanessa into marriage. They were beautifully done and I couldn’t help but smile through them the whole time. The best thing about them is how they helped the story.

Last week, while all of the adults were infighting about the merits of athleticism, Marti and Dan discussed their affair in high school and all that it did and did not mean. In the years that followed, they’ve become best friends. Hell, Dan is even dating Marti’s best girlfriend and co-cheerleader, Savannah. But anyone who has watched knows that the reason Marti and Dan remained friends is because they can’t let each other go. They are unresolved. When they “slipped” and made out, it threw them both for a loop. That’s what lead to Marti’s dream of dancing in and out of both Dan’s and Lewis’ arms, and waking in turmoil.

We also know that Vanessa and Red are unresolved. The full story has not been explored, but what they had obviously ended prematurely, and lingering feelings are in their every encounter. It doesn’t help matters that Vanessa feels like Derrick is putting his job before their relationship. With Red always stepping in at the right moment; after a spilled cup of coffee, when she’s having a problem with one of her squad. And, always with a story of hope peppered with a dash of personal memories.

So my question is: Are you ever so secure and happy in a relationship that you forget the one who got away? The one who, because it was unresolved and “what ifs” remain, always seems to pop into your head during moments of doubt? And more importantly, if you were faced with a second chance with that person, even if you were with someone you love, would you take it?

Dan is a stand up guy, and his feelings for Marti bother him enough that he decides to break things off with Savannah because he thinks she deserves better. What a bummer for Savannah, because it’s one hell of a guy who would walk away from someone like Savannah before he could really hurt her.

Derrick wasn’t working as much as Vanessa thought, after all. He was planning an elaborate dance routine with the Hellcats to propose. It was really awesome, and to think a man loves her so much as to go to all of that trouble. Just wow. Of course she says yes. Who wouldn’t? The next scene shows Red walking into Vanessa’s office and planting a kiss on her. She pushes him away, but gives in to passion. She, too, then awakes in turmoil.

The one that got away. What ever happens to them, and do you ever get them out of your mind completely?

I am not a fan of Dan/Marti. In fact, i am so anti that pairing right now, that the thought of them possibly brings on an outbreak of hives. Its not that i want Dan with Savannah either. I think my issue is with Dan as a character. He isnt very well characterised. We dont really know that much about him. He flits in and out of the storylines he is needed in but otherwise is completely superflous. He doesnt do commitment, he doesnt do relationships. I never could figure out why he was into Savannah to begin with.. he didnt seem that into her and yet they were suddenly dating.

Saving grave, i looove Red and Vanessa. Now there is some awesome chemistry waiting to be explored.

Great review!
