I didn’t watch most of last week’s episode, but I did get to see the clip of the models falling down time after time on roller skates. Jay Manuel seemed incredibly harsh to those that fell, even those who seemed to be in real pain. So, when they had the ladies wear heavy fall knits in the middle of the Italian summer in an un-air-conditioned panel room this week, I just had to wonder what the heck they were thinking.
This was the episode where the girls learned they were actually going to Italy, but come on, Tyra! The prize this season is a spread in Italian Vogue and the girl’s house is in Venice, California. Even the duller knives in the drawer should have figured out they were going to travel to Venice, Italy.
The actual photo shoot in Venice was really interesting. They posed as the women of Cassanova on a gondola. Jane bragged a little about being a history major, which made me think the editors were setting her up to fail, but she did had a sexy effortlessness to her shoot. The other stand out for me was Kayla, who I’ve liked from the beginning of the season. I was nervous when she got that crazy Mary Jane Watson red hair back in the makeover episode, but she’s done a really great job owning the look. And she hasn’t been too naggy … who has been too naggy is Liz, who didn’t do very well in the photo shoot and complained all the way. My other least favorite was Ann, who looked like a dead fish in the boat.
This lead to the judges panel, where they had the models dress in those heavy knits, courtesy of guest judge Margherita Missoni, in an already sweltering set. Once she saw the girls about to faint, Tyra was smart enough to let all the girls sit down while they finished up their critiques (although she encouraged them to “sit fierce”). Ann’s photo came out better that you would expect if you saw her during the shoot, but it was Jane and Kayla that made them rave.
So here was the final order:
Kayla
Jane
Chelsey
Ann
Chris
Liz
They warned last week’s top contender Chris to step up her game, but it was ultimately Liz’s bad attitude that sent her home. The models have been moved to Milan, so ANTM should have plenty of opportunities to mention Italian Vogue.
What were they thinking? Roller Skates? No air conditioning?
