ABC – Extreme Makeover (9.02m/2.4), Desperate Housewives (12.16m/3.9), and Brothers & Sisters (8.21m/2.5) got the week off to a usual start. And Dancing With The Stars (20.41m/4.3) joined right in on Monday. The big news was that Castle (11.32m/2.9) moved ahead of Hawaii Five-O in viewers and demo for the first time. It’s still a very close race, and promises to be very interesting for some time. If you’re rooting for Five-O in this battle, I would expect it to take back the crown when DWTS ends.
Tuesday, No Ordinary Family (7.38m/2) continued to slip, while DWTS Results (15.93m/3.1) was solid, and Detroit 187 (8.45m/1.9) posted small gains. Halloween brought good news for the Wednesday comedies, with The Middle (9.54m/2.9), Better With You (7.67m/2.5), Modern Family (13.14m/5.1), and Cougar Town (8.16m/3.3) all up over the previous week. That didn’t offer any help to the now canceled The Whole Truth (4.4m/1.1).
There was more good news Thursday when The Great Pumpkin (6.98m/2.2) jumped into the 8PM slot. Not huge numbers, but better than what the weekly Grey’s repeat has been offering. Grey’s Anatomy (10.79m/3.9) and Private Practice (7.68m/2.7) were both around usual levels.
CBS – The Amazing Race (11.42m/3.4), Undercover Boss (12m/3.5), and CSI Miami (10m/2.5) made for a solid start to the week. The Miami numbers are still off what one might have expected, but still above last year’s performance on Sunday. There was nothing unusual to report from How I Met Your Mother (8.29m/3.2), Rules Of Engagement (8.17m/3), 2 ½ Men (13.77m/4.4), and Mike & Molly (10.81m/3.7) on Monday. As mentioned above, Hawaii Five-O (10.23m/2.8) fell behind Castle, hitting lows for the series in both measures. It will be interesting to see what happens to the numbers during sweeps.
It was business as usual from NCIS (20.18m/4.1), NCIS: LA (15.99m/3.4), and The Good Wife (12.59m/2.4) on Tuesday. Survivor (11.82m/3.5) and Criminal Minds (13.94m/3.4) were also solid facing the World Series on Wednesday. The Defenders (9.8m/2.1) remains the biggest question mark of the network’s new shows. Big Bang Theory (13.04m/4.2), $#*! My Dad Says (10.81m/3.1), CSI (14.27m/3.3), and The Mentalist (14.76m/3.2) all looked solid Thursday. And the week wrapped up with Medium (6.86m/1.4), CSI: NY (10.42m/1.8), and Blue Bloods (11.54m/1.8) on Friday.
NBC - Sunday Night Football (25.68m/9.8) easily took the viewer and demo crowns for the week. That was soon followed by what has become a steady performance for Chuck (5.45m/1.9), and further declines for The Event (5.97m/2), and Chase (4.89m/1.3). The Biggest Loser (6.7m/2.4) continues to be a huge trouble spot for the network, because that had been one of the few shows that could be counted on over the past couple of years. Those declines are being reflected in the numbers for Parenthood (4.94m/2).
Undercovers (5.45m/1.4) was again a distant fourth, not even managing half the demo of third place The Middle at 8. There was some good news on Thursday, however. Scared Shrekless (8.33m/2.6) subbed in at 8 and was well above what Community usually does. With the lead-in, an 8:30 Community (5.64m/2.4) was up as well, week-to-week. The Office (8.07m/4) tied the World Series for #1 in the demo at 9. And, as usual, that boost was completely wasted on Outsourced (5.94m/2.7). The Apprentice (3.79m/1.4) finished off Thursday night. And the week wrapped with nobody watching School Pride (2.35m/.6).
FOX – It’s that time of the year, where baseball creates havoc with the FOX schedule. The World Series (Game 1 15.01m/4.7 – Game 2 14.13m/4) did as well as expected without the Yankees in the mix. In non-sports programming, it’s really starting to look like the end is near for Lie To Me (4.26m/1.6). The only thing the show has going for it at this point is that it’s not The Good Guys (2.45m/.7). The news was, of course, much better for Glee (11.76m/4.9). Raising Hope (6m/2.5 – 5.37m/2.2) also provided a much needed boost in replacing Running Wilde.
CW - Another pretty standard week from 90210 (2.03m/1), Gossip Girl (1.88m/1), America’s Next Top Model (2.66m/1.3), Hellcats (2.03m/.9), Vampire Diaries (3.55m/1.7), Nikita (2.48m/1), Smallville (2.92m/1.2), and Supernatural (2.48m/1.1). The continued declines of Nikita are worth watching, but that was against the World Series, which no doubt pulled away some male viewers.
CABLE - The big news this week was Syfy’s sudden cancellation of Caprica (.84m/.3). The cancellation wasn’t a complete surprise, because the numbers have been very bad. I never expected them to yank the show from the schedule though. Apparently, the remaining episodes will air some time in 2011. That calls to mind two other bits of ratings. First, you have to wonder what the future of Stargate Universe (1.01m/.4) is. Those are better numbers than Caprica, but not that much better. And you should also be aware of the premiere of Syfy’s new memorabilia auction show, Hollywood Treasures (1.5m/.7).

If you’re looking for something positive, In Treatment is doubling the viewer number for Gravity on Starz, which I recall hitting .12m at some point. So, that’s something…

Stargate is going to be produced until the cast gets to expensive. Meaning it all depends on when they will get their first raises that are surely built into their contracts. SyFy needs one hallmark show.

I’m not dismissing your idea that Syfy would like to keep one hallmark show, but I’m not sure that SGU passes muster for being that hallmark show. Is there something that makes it more worthy of that status than Warehouse 13 or Eureka?
