There’s just something about hearing the voice of ole’ “Slamming” Sammy Meade that instantly brings you back to Dillon, Texas. Last season, while ending on a (mostly) positive note, was a test of sorts for most of the rest of the cast. I always love how the first episode of Friday Night Lights reveals little secrets about how the Winter, Spring, and Summer didn’t go exactly how the audience expected.
When Eric looked over at his family and said, “I’m going to miss this,” I was thinking the same thing. With Julie leaving for college, I do think that the show will worse off for having the sometimes most-of-the-time argumentative daughter for Eric and Tami to play off of, but alas, that is the way of the world. Eric and Julie’s walk down memory lane, though, culminating in one last ping-pong game, was a nice way to start Julie’s goodbye.
Of all of the new characters introduced last season, Becky was probably my favorite (Though it would probably be more accurate to say the one I “hated the least,” but whatever.), and she seems to be the worst off of all of the new kids. Her stepmother was so horrible she was almost a caricature. I hope that the look on Mindy’s face when Billy took Becky in isn’t foreshadowing bad things to come from the show’s only remaining Collette.
Speaking of the Riggins clan, Tim apparently only has three months left on his filming of John Carter of Mars sentence. Billy’s reaction, between his constant visit to the prison, and eventual joining of the coaching staff, is expected, but still a little off-putting. Though, truly, when has Billy not been a little off-putting?
My jokes about the new kids weren’t entirely accurate; I do like Vince, as well. However, Vince and Jess? Not so much — blame how Landry had to take that one on the chin. Now … Vince and Jess quasi-raising her brothers? Even less interesting.
Notes & Quotes
Interesting that Becky is your favorite of the new characters. You’re the only person I know of that has that opinion! I like all the new characters except Becky. I hope she grows up a bit this season.

Like I said, it really is much more of a matter of disliking her the least. I really don’t care for any of the characters they introduced last year … just a matter of degrees.
But you wrote that you like Vince.

Fair enough. Let me clarify: I don’t really like any of them. Just some I dislike more than others.
Not one of these characters is as interesting as Tyra, Landry, Riggins, Street, Julie, Smash, or Matt.
So Season 5 of FNL and “John Carter of Mars” were filmed at the same time?
