It’s all about the baby talk on How I Met Your Mother

Were Marshall and Lily jumping through an unusual number of hoops in their baby making, or just the normal amount of hoops?

- Season 6, Episode 6 - "Baby Talk"

It really stinks when you sit through thirty minutes of a television show, and don’t really have anything to say about it. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed at the appropriate times, giggled when I was supposed to … I even grimaced on cue (Old Barney, right?). But as I sat down to pound out a few words about the episode, I was just left … blank.

Considering though, that most of the episode was about getting ready to have a baby, and I am a single male very, very far from that particular point in my life, it does make some sense. Do people really fret that much over names (I was named after my father, and his father, and … well, his father). So, as I sat here, flummoxed, I turned to fellow How I Met Your Mother (kinda) fan, and mother:

Deb: The part about the taboo baby names was completely hilarious to me. I used to be an elementary classroom teacher and I can tell you that Lily’s situation was not even remotely exaggerated. I had the same issues when Keith and I were choosing names for our kid … there was not going to be a Jacob or a Calvin, that much I knew before we even began discussing our choices. I’m not sure if Keith didn’t like some of the girl names I picked because of strippers or not … he wasn’t forthcoming about that.

What about you? Were Marshal and Lily’s arguments realistic? Or even more scary, were the steps they were taking to influence the sex of their kid accurate?

Or was I wrong to be excited that Lily’s first suggestion was Tara?

The name thing I could relate to…you don’t want to think of someone you don’t like every time you say your kid’s name!

I thought Lily said Tara, too, but then later I thought I heard “Kara,” so I wasn’t sure.

I had to giggle at the demise of Ted’s new relationship.

It was an amusing episode, but not memorable…

One of my friends did insist “no striper-names” and neither he nor his wife wanted a name that was already taken by a baby/child that they knew.

Lily definitely said “Tara”. After I read this post, which I did immediately after viewing the episode (I skim the recaps), I listened to it twice more. I was waiting for a Buffy reference.
