Dexter – At least for Lumen, it’s not over yet

The final scene of this episode can be interpreted in several different ways, at least if you're not privy to any information for following episodes. Could it be that Dexter's gaining a new partner in crime?

- Season 5, Episode 4 - "Beauty and the Beast"

Maybe it’s just me, but was anyone else a tad confused by the final scene in this episode of Dexter? In the scene, Lumen — the female captor who Dexter was finally able to calm — tells Dex that “it’s not over,” and that there are more out there (like Boyd Fowler). I feel that what she says could be interpreted in several different ways:

1) Boyd wasn’t working alone, and Dexter has some other scum to take care of. Unlikely, since Lumen says this “has happened before,” though I don’t believe she means while being held by Boyd.

2) Lumen makes her statement after Dexter suggests she goes home to the family that loves her. She hesitates. Is this because she’s talking about her own family being the ones who had done this to her before?

3) She just has horrible luck and this has been done to her before, by someone else. Most likely it’d be as a result of living on the streets and doing who-kn0ws-what to make money.

4) She sees she has a quasi-vigilante in her back pocket now, and she can maybe make use of him to take care of some other dirtbags she’d rather not see alive any longer.

5) It means nothing. She was just making a blanket statement, that there are more scumbags out there. Dexter won’t do anything about it, and Lumen will be gone in the next episode.

I’m leaning between #3 and #5. I could see, possibly, that Lumen was talking about her parents, but what does that matter when they are halfway across the country? It’s unlikely Dexter would take a trip just to feed his Dark Passenger, so I’d say it’s someone in Florida or it’s simply nothing at all, and we won’t see Lumen again.

Getting off that topic now, the scene with Quinn in the convenience store was pretty intense. for those of us worried Dexter’s secret will get out (or that Quinn is as good as dead in this season). It was clear that Jonah Mitchell didn’t lead on one bit that the photo of Dexter looked familiar, which sort of frustrated me but sure as hell frustrated Quinn. Sure, Quinn lets on to LaGuerta that Jonah had a gleam of recognition in his eye, but that’s total bullshit. It was a full-on poker face, which means that there’s a very good chance at least Jonah will not finger Dexter in the investigation at all, because “Kyle Butler” really did help them out, after all. Hopefully, for Quinn lovers, his little pursuit will hit a dead end soon.

Oh, one little nitpick. Why would Lumen have fingerprints on file if her record was squeaky clean, if not non-existent? When would she have been printed to have them on file? That sorta irritated me.

Based on the part where she assumes that Dexter is going to sell her, I got the impression that Lumen got caught up in a ring of bad guys that had been selling girls to people like Boyd. Kind of like a prostitution ring but for psychos and serial killers.

That’s just wild speculation though. It also looked like she just made the story up so that Dexter wouldn’t send her home.

That’s definitely a good assumption, re: the human trafficking aspect. She seemed to be familiar with it, so there’s a very good chance what Dexter’s stumbled upon is the source of a slew of murderous scum that he can pick and choose from.

I just hope that Lumen doesn’t become his partner and then she turns darker forcing Dexter to kill her a la Lila and Miguel Prado.

I thought she said “Boyd wasn’t the only one who did this to me” when she said it wasn’t over. The look on Dexter’s face at the end suggested to me that there were more local scumbags to take care of, and all she needed to do was point the way. That’s an angle we haven’t seen before, and it could certainly get out of hand if she gets a bit more zealous. However, I would like to see it played straight without Lumen being turned into a villain that he eventually has to kill like every other primary guest star Dex dealt with for the first 4 seasons (Brian Moser, Lila, Miguel Prado, Arthur Mitchell). Heck, he could use a romance with Rita out of the picture, and I wouldn’t mind it going in that direction if they do it well. I could see it going there.

Based on next episode’s trailers, it’s probably interpretation number 1. And I’m betting that it’s some kind of cult. With the ‘Take It!’ guy as the head.

Remember when Boyd was on the table, he said that Dexter didn’t know what he was getting into? Or something like that. Weird, huh? And what did he mean by freeing the girls? Maybe freeing them from whatever sick thing the cult was into! Maybe this is the Moloch cult thing from the books! hmmm

AH! So, it sounds like possibly all those women Boyd killed were possibly supplied by the “Take It!” guy. So maybe Dexter’s new #1 target is a cult leader like Charles Manson!

I think the ‘Take It’ guy is a definite possibility. Something like the Tom Cruise character in Magnolia …
