The Big Bang Theory – Bernadette returns, as does Katee Sackhoff and Sulu

Tonight on CBS was like doing the Time Warp and throwing us back to the 1960s. George Takei (Mr. Sulu) had an appearance on 'The Big Bang Theory' while William Shatner was in his own sitcom, '$#*! my Dad Says' in the next half hour. Beam me up, Scotty.

- Season 4, Episode 4 - "The Hot Troll Deviation"

Odd bedfellows indeed, but we’re talking Howard Wolowitz’s bedroom at night. That’s somewhere no normal folks would ever want to be. Katee Sackhoff returned playing herself, naturally. And George Takei also showed up, much more himself than he ever was as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek: TOS. But, even more important — Bernadette’s back, and now we know the whole mystery behind her disappearance.

While I’m admittedly a huge Jim Parsons/Sheldon Cooper fan, it’s a nice break to have a non-Sheldon-centric episode now and again. That is, if we don’t have to watch Penny and Leonard cuddling. I just never could abide by that! However, I did enjoy the Howard’s girlfriend Bernadette story lines until Bernadette dropped off the face of the earth without a mention. They still handled that wrong, methinks.

The explanation, only brought out by blackmail (gotta love Penny), all but screamed “WOLOWITZ.” Perhaps not quite as literally as his mother screams his name, but it was Howard’s character in and out.  So Bernadette caught Howard cheating on her with a troll from World of Warcraft. I can see that happening; it’s totally a Howard move.

Howard’s moves include silk shortie pajamas and his Katee Sackhoff dreams, too. The Katee dreams have her wanting to be ravished when Sulu George Takei shows up. He mentioned the possibility that Howard has latent homosexual tendencies — something we’ve all observed between Raj and Howard. “No, of course not!” said Howard. “You say, yet I’m here,” Takei replied. I love it!

But then Bernadette showed up in the bed, too. Yikes, getting kind of full in the room, eh? She’s right. Howard doesn’t really want either Katee Sackhoff or George Takei. Well, he would take the former in a heartbeat but knows it’s just not going to happen. He wants Bernadette. It looks like we’ll be seeing her again.

In the side story, Raj and Sheldon were at war over Raj having a desk in Sheldon’s office. I enjoy seeing Raj doing something other than not talking when he’s around Penny. When they do feature his character, he has some great lines. They just don’t do it enough.

Best line of the night? For me, it was when Leonard was talking to Sheldon about Howard and Bernadette getting back together. Sheldon questioned why Leonard was telling him all of this. “I’m sorry. Your movements are so lifelike, I sometimes forget you’re not a real boy.”

All in all, a fun romp little episode and a recurring character I enjoy seeing. Plus, I learned (or re-learned) that xenon is a gas. That will help me in my future career, for sure.

I don’t understand why they didn’t make “real Katee Sackhoff” the troll. Final scene: Sackhoff at her computer complaining – something like “not even my WoW troll can get laid by nerds anymore” but I guess they couldn’t really make that work because she doesn’t have a signature show anymore (could’ve shown her at work on the set), nobody knows what her real life home looks like either so it would have taken too much exposition to set that joke up.

But it would’ve been awesome – Howard not just getting any from his girl but also missing out on “real cybersex” with the real life Katee Sackhoff. I guess the janitor was the second best option.

I really enjoyed this episode. Getting a Howard-centric episode was nice. Especially because it gave the writers the opportunity to pair up Raj and Sheldon in a battle for office supremacy. Leonard was basically an after though this episode. Almost relegated to the status that Howard and/or Raj normally hold.

One quick correction: Bernadette showed up before George Takei did in Howard’s room. Bernadette replaced Katee, then Katee reappeared on the other side of Howard and then George shows up.
