Yawn. Another slow week on and off Wisteria Lane as Susan got into a fight with a rival Va-Va-Va Broom employee (and just how clueless is Mike?); Gaby and Carlos decided not to sue the hospital that switched their child at birth as long as the hospital called off the search for the other family (and of course Gaby went behind Carlos’ back to find them anyway); and Lynette and Tom had another problem related to Tom’s depression, which he solved — or thought he solved — after a doctor prescribed him medical marijuana that Lynette threw out and substituted with oregano to prove that Tom’s issues were all in his head (they were and he didn’t even freak out about her deception). And the women decided it was time to gang up on Beth, Paul Young’s new wife, to do some digging into what she really knows about Paul. It took an encounter with Mrs. McClusky to bring out the accusation that he murdered Felicia Tillman’s sister, and it didn’t even seem to phase her … or did it?
But we all have to thank the TV gods first for giving us Ugly Betty and Wilhelmina Slater, then for taking Ugly Betty away and making Vanessa Williams free to join Desperate Housewives. Williams’ new character, Renee Perry, has brought some much needed zing to the show since creator Marc Cherry had enough of Nicolette Sheridan and killed off her character. You know your boss really doesn’t want you around when he kills off your character, and it’s not one of those off-camera soap opera deaths that will eventually find you returning to wreak more havoc. So now instead of Edie, we have Renee — who just happens to now live in Edie’s old house. How convenient!
We already know Renee has a past with Lynette (and it was odd that the two didn’t share one scene together besides the poker game with the girls), but this week’s episode was full of wickedly great classic DH comedy as Renee tried to entice Bree to let her hair down and go on a manhunt with her. There were some great lines and looks from Renee taking shots at Bree’s wardrobe, her tightly wound hair, and the fact that she was able to find a new man without ever leaving her house. When she found out Bree’s new man was hunky contractor Keith, Renee set her sights on him as well, and I think it’s going to be a great slow-burning feud between the two of them before things really get out of hand. The writing in the scenes between Bree and Renee was just spot on and hilarious. I’m a little bored with most of the stories so far — it’s taking too long already for the Paul Young story to kick into gear — but as long as they can keep writing some great material for Vanessa Williams, that is enough to keep me tuning in.
“On this street, never confuse being nosy with being friendly.” – Paul to Beth, after the ladies of Wisteria Lane paid a “friendly” visit
“Look, one woman at a bar is just sad, but two and it’s girls’ night out.” – Renee to Bree
“I was plenty cool in college. The only reason I didn’t smoke back then was because I signed the abstinence pledge with my Dungeons & Dragons club.” – Tom
“I have never seen so many sweater sets. Are you sure this is a closet and not a portal to the 1950s?” – Renee, looking for something sexy in Bree’s closet
“I happen to find it distasteful when mutton is dressed as lamb.” – Bree, referring to Renee’s sexy clubbing outfit
