I really want to do this review, because it was a great episode of Community, as usual, but I have to get this first thing out of the way: you know the blond dude who came up to Annie when she and Britta first started trying to raise money for the oil spill? The one who said he’d give her twenty extra dollars and started the whole fight between her and Britta? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen his penis.
Now, this isn’t turning into some weird “CliqueClack After Dark” thing. It was super-random (and I’m not even sure it was the same dude; so don’t sue me for libel!). But when I lived in New York, I loved going to the UCB theatre. Every summer, they have a Del Close Marathon, which is 72 hours straight of sketch comedy. I was at one random 8 AM show, and these three dudes showed up and sat in the audience completely naked. I’m pretty sure that guy was one of them (Here’s a photo. I think the one on the left is the guy). So random blond dude, if you’re reading this, let me know if I’m correct. Also, good on ya. Look how far you’ve come! Also, that’s what she said.
Moving on.
I love how Pierce’s religion is basically a stand-in for Scientology, although I hate the fact that Scientology has such a hold over Hollywood that they have to make it an offshoot of Buddhism involving lasers. But the bullshit death theories and the expensive tchotchkes and levels are 100% Scientology, which is evil.
Pierce’s drama, plus Britta and Annie’s fundraising efforts meant that Jeff took the back burner in this episode, which is okay. Community has one of the strongest ensembles on television, so I’m glad that they’re not overly relying on Jeff to drive the plot. His cholesterol story was fine, but the best part was guest-star Patton Oswalt‘s line: “Come on ladies; those paps aren’t going to smear themselves!”
Speaking of great lines, Shirley was pushed toward the back in this episode as well, which I wasn’t fond of. However, her observation of, “Yeah, you two are so different. Skinny bitches,” was so dead-on. Because honestly? Britta and Annie are exactly the same. I love that they were both called out on their nonsense too. No matter how innocent Annie claims to be or how much of a feminist Britta is, they both are gorgeous women who like getting attention, and the fact that the show addresses this issue is something that is oddly rare in primetime.
Here’s what I want to know: what was Abed up to? At the end of the episode, Shirley asks him, and he says not much, but that can’t be true, right? I was expecting something elaborate for the end credits, but he wasn’t even in it! Instead, we had Betty White explaining Inception. You guys, I love Betty White, but I hate endings that are anything but Abed and Troy. I need more Abed!
I kind of liked Shirley as an observer and her “so what are the two of you up to together as a pair” hints that she was being excluded. As for your episode blurb, shouldn’t that read “Patton Oswalt is giving Pap Smears”? Either way…ewwww!

Ha! You’re right. I totally wrote “getting.” That’s awkward. It’s fixed though; thanks!
No problem. Although I apparently missed a whole lot of stuff going on in the background, so maybe Patton WAS getting a Pap Smear too! LOL
The reference to Abed in the end was about his actions with the pregnant lady in the background throughout the episode, culminating with him delivering the baby in the back of an SUV.

I don’t believe I missed that! I’m usually really good at spotting things like that. I did notice the pregnant lady in a scene or two, but totally missed everything else.
Yeah the baby delivery was easy to miss. Was going on in the parking lot, behind Shirley in one scene.
That credit roll with Betty White was awesome!
also, I guess I need to rewatch to see Abed with the pregnant lady. does it happen with just that one scene or all throughout the episode?
Apparently Abed was in the background the entire episode with an unspoken story where he meets a pregnant woman, fights her boyfriend, and then delivers her baby. I deleted the episode off my DVR before reading about that, so I can’t personally prove if thats true or Imdb lies.
I was talking to someone who was complaining about Inception this afternoon so maybe thats why I loved the Betty White cameo. Though the best part tonight was “You’re being childish. Hang on I have to use my force field powers to prevent Chang from getting food..” Actually everything John Oliver said was great.
Or just listen to the people above me who’s comments didn’t appear on the page till after I posted about the Abed story.
I also had giant love for the force field. Or for not knowing jack about anthropology. And pulling a class on anesthesiology out of his ass.
Just went through to find it all.
At first the pregnant girl stops Abed on the sidewald & for some reason gets in a fight with her boyfriend when Annie & Britta first start their cause & Annie gets $20.
When Jeff is talking to Prof. Duncan & they seem to be debating over something in the background & Abed helps the girl out of the cafeteria with her boyfriend after she starts to get pains.
He delivers the baby when Britta & Annie are fighting & the guys are in the car listening to Pierce’s mom.
The blond guy is DC Pierson. He is actually in Donald Glover’s sketch comedy group, Derrick Comedy (he has also been in two other Community episodes). It sounds like it is very possible you did see him naked, since Derrick Comedy cut their teeth in UCB theater.
check out https://www.derrickcomedy.com for hilarity.
I think you’re right! I’m still not 100% sure it’s the same guy, but now that you’ve put the Derrick/UCB connection out there, I do remember seeing naked guy performing, and if I’m not mistaken, I saw him performing with Derrick. Which means, I guess, that I saw Donald Glover as well. Also, now I may be remembering Donald Glover from a particular sketch from that same Del Close marathon (or I could be completely drunk). Hmmmm….

That is a link to Abed’s story! Check it out! It was hilarious!!!! I missed it until the very end when he was delivering a baby at which point I had to rewind the whole episode and see it! Greatness!!!
