(Season 3, Episodes 9-10)
When did Ted Danson pull out as an investor in Larry’s restaurant? I always found it a bit odd that he’d orbit in Larry’s sphere, especially after the way George so looked down on him on Seinfeld, but the restaurant legitimized his presence on the show. Now that he’s out … besides, it was always fun watching as Danson tried to understand some of the decisions Larry attempted to make. It’s a real shame that we’re losing that.
3.9 “Mary, Joseph and Larry”
This entire episode lived in the shadow of the pubic hair stuck in Larry’s throat. And the fact that it was also an episode that Cheryl’s parents were on … the entire thing was just unsettling. Speaking of, I always find it weird for Larry to supposedly be Paul Dooley’s son-in-law. Larry seems closer to his age than Cheryl’s, and it’s always weird to picture Larry and Dooley having the traditional elder/younger relationship that exists between in-laws.
I think that tipping should possibly be a plot on every single episode of Curb, because Larry is such an awkward person that watching him perform such an awkward task is hilarious. I love how it snowballed into Dora (Dyana Ortelli) the housekeeper being insulted, Larry taking her out to lunch, and her being offended that he didn’t wear the itchy scarf she gave to him.
It’s a little rude for Cheryl’s family to throw Christmas in Larry’s face when it obviously upset him. The giant tree, the caroling late into the night … they could have at least tried to make him feel comfortable in his own home. But what in the world did cookies have to do with the manger scene that Larry ended up bringing to the house? At best the cookies would have been for a mini display, so how did it make more sense to hire a manger troupe than to bake more cookies?
I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen David Koechner (here as Joseph) quite as sedate as he was this episode. He plays Todd Packer on The Office, and was Champ Kind in Anchorman. I figured that had to be his natural boisterousness. Instead, it just must be good acting.
3.10 “The Grand Opening”
I loved the chef who was hired under false pretenses of baldness. Larry’s a real nut, but it was funny how he lived up to the conversation he and Ian Gomez had during their initial interview.
The whole dodge ball with the restaurant critic fiasco was really weird. How random an activity could Larry have chosen as a field for the mishap to occur? Obviously it led somewhere worthwhile — the chef with turrets was definitely funny, and was done surprisingly tastefully — but still. Larry saving the day by shouting out obscenities was perfect, and was a great way to end the season.
My favorite part, of course, was seeing Cheryl and Larry stuck in Cheryl’s car inside a car wash. Does that happen? Has anyone ever gotten out of the car and run to freedom like Cheryl did? What kind of a crazy world.
He continues to offend me, but three seasons down I’m definitely enjoying Larry David’s show.
