Covert Affairs – Auggie loses in love, wins at work

It seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago that I was saying that Chris Gorham as Auggie Anderson was one of the best parts of Covert Affairs (newsflash: It was a couple of weeks ago). If that argument hadn’t been codified as fact across the known world, tonight’s episode should have done that job. Auggie is a man broken in more than one way, struggling with the constant need to prove himself to everyone around him.

The worst part of that lack of confidence — and a deep-seated lack of confidence is exactly what’s going on — is that it completely unfounded. We’ve seen that he’s an incredible support officer. We saw tonight that he can still hold his own in the field as well (Pulling Natasha out of the way of the SUV? Kinda badass). Despite his injury, Auggie has proven himself to any measurable extent. Except for the whole “decision making” part of the equation. He obviously has some work to do in that regard.

Liza Hearn is pumping Arthur for information and is just … well … pumping Auggie.  Or he is playing Liza, and not telling anyone about it? It is a dangerous game that both of them are playing, but if Auggie loses, he’s out of a job. I doubt the reporter is in the same situation, and probably comes out of the worst case scenario in a much better position.

It figures that if you’re going to do an episode about big nerds, then you’ve got to include ole Wassenfelder himself, Dylan Taylor. Considering the James Parriott connection, I’m not surprised, and think he’d make a good addition to the cast. When I missed his name in the guest credits, I went back to the main credits, holding out hope I’d missed a casting announcement. Unfortunately he was in neither, nor listed on IMDb, so I guess we’ll find out in the coming weeks. His resume at the Jane Abrams Talent Agency lists him as “Recurring,” which I call a very good sign.
