It may not be the appropriate place — then again, when listing the best quotes of the week, why not talk about shows that have been falling short? — but I’d like to take this opportunity to air some concerns I have for TNT and USA Network.
I can forgive mediocre products like HawthoRNe and Rizzoli & Isles from the networks that have brought us smash hits like Dark Blue, Men of a Certain Age, The Closer (so I’m told), White Collar, Psych, and Royal Pains. But how depressing do both networks’ futures seem with once-soaring-yet-recent-crash-and-burning Leverage, Burn Notice, and In Plain Sight, not to mention flops like Memphis Beat, and Covert Affairs? I hope they haven’t run out of secret sauce.
By the way, the answer to my title question? Both men were mentioned on this week’s episode of Psych. Go figure.

I’d have to disagree with you a bit. I like Covert Affairs, and find it really fills a niche that has been empty since Alias went off the air. Burn Notice is actually a lot better this year, and In Plain Sight has never been more evenly paced and emotionally solid.
If anything, of the USA Network shows, Psych has not been living up to what it used to be.
And, yes, The Closer is awesome.
Man, it must be sunspots or psychosis, but I’m finding myself agreeing with you to a greater degree than I thought possible.
First I’d like to list the disagreements, mostly because I like to argue. I find “Leverage” to be back on its game and I like “Covert Affairs” even if I wasn’t blown away by the pilot. I can see it finding its footing, but I hate shows that seem to have the need to do that.
Now for the agreeing. “Burn Notice” is still entertaining, but it’s a far cry from what it once was and I hope it’s just a temporary lull since I like all the main characters, although they could do without Jesse. That character seems to be without a personality. He’s just kind of generic.
“In Plain Sight” is just awful. I can’t exactly figure out what it is about the show that’s made it so un-entertaining, but I almost found it a chore to finish out the season. It was never one of my favorite shows, but I always liked it enough to watch and enjoy. Not so much this season.
“Memphis Beat” was so boring I fell asleep during the pilot and I swear I never fall asleep watching TV. It’s usually what keeps me up half the night. I haven’t bothered to check out any more episodes because it just doesn’t do it for me and it reminds me that “My Name Is Earl” is no longer with us.
“White Collar” started off last year as one of my favorites and it’s just gotten better and better. I really look forward to this show as the two leads have great chemistry together. I also like the way Peter’s wife is a smart, loving, understanding and helpful character. She has a friendship with Neil that’s nothing more than friends. The show could’ve easily had Neil try to make sexual advances on her, but they’ve stayed classy and made a great character out of her. Mozzie needs nothing said except he’s one hell of a fun character. Great show overall.
“Royal Pains” started off for me as ‘just okay’ and for some reason the theme song irritates the hell out of me (I always skip forward so I don’t have to hear it). This year I’m enjoying the show more, mainly because they brought the character of Evan down a few notches. He was really annoying in season 1, but now he’s only somewhat annoying. They still don’t use Divya enough and Hank’s ‘girlfriend’ is as bland as hospital food.
I still watch all the shows because even the bad ones are better than most of what’s on in the Summer. Any scripted show beats the reality and game show pablum.
BTW, I think “The Glades” is becoming one of my favorites.
I’m so glad USA and TNT (and now A&E) are putting forth their original programming. Last night’s Leverage was a call-back to season two (yikes!) but other than that I’ve been enjoying this season (though nothing can live up to the near-perfect season one). I’m about the only person left who still loves Burn Notice … sigh. I really like Covert Affairs — what’s up with the hate, Aryeh? And Tom, I agree about The Glades — I love it!
Debbie,
I’m glad to hear someone else is loving “The Glades” because I’ve always enjoyed procedurals with a little humor or some other quirk thrown in.
Please don’t feel like you’re the only one who loves “Burn Notice” because I still love it. I just don’t love it quite as much as I used to and I can’t decide if it’s because of Jesse, who I find bland, or because there’s less Madeline lately just as she was starting to feel like part of the team. Maybe it’s something completely different…I did buy new underwear and that can have a profound effect on a person’s outlook.
Sorry, it’s time to stop the Overshare Express now.
I never agree with Aryeh, so nothing surprises me at this point. I love Covert Affairs. Its great fun and the mini mysteries aren’t so easily followed that you’re the first one on the block to know the end.
The Glades is just awesome. Ok, I want to eat Matt Passmore (funnily, I don’t even find him traditionally attractive) – his portrayal is just perfect – snarky yet compassionate. He seems like a real person.
In Plain Sight finally got it’s groove back during its short season this year by taking the focus off of the family. That was a welcome relief.
I didn’t even watch the end of the season of White Collar last year because I got annoyed, but this year it’s hitting some high points that keep me tuning in. The same goes with Royal Pains. It felt like it was trying too hard, but now it just swims along without the annoyance I felt in the past. Exception, unfortunately is the Fonz. He just doesn’t fit. Although I did like them photo-shopping his Fonz head onto an old photograph. That was cool.
Memphis Beat bores me. Psych needs to bring on the funny – haven’t felt the funny in the two eps so far. Burn Notice needs to shake things up. Right now its just a procedural. Ick.
Finally – I admit to falling for Rizzoli and Isles. They play well off of each other, and some great one liners can be found.

James – I’ve never seen Alias, so I wouldn’t know about that, but I couldn’t have been more bored by Covert Affairs. Both my wife and I barely made it through the pilot. The story was bad, the acting uncomfortably stilted, and the plot miserable. To each their own, but I have no idea what people are seeing in it.
Burn Notice is just boring this season. I covered an episode for Debbie recently, and I said then that the Jesse story is muscling Michael out unnecessarily, the clients are not as compelling as they once were, and the overarching plot has become so convoluted that it’s nearly impossible to follow without a notebook and flowcharts.
I covered In Plain Sight season two because I loved season one, but I dropped coverage this season because it went from bad to worse. I thought the problem was Mary’s family (and her), but when they stripped the family away the show just got more and more awful. I could barely make it to end of this past season.
Tom – It is a frightening thing when we agree, but it’s nice for you to be right sometimes. Yay for you!
Leverage has no oomph this season. I don’t agree with some that season one was great, but it was solid. Season two was, of course, miserable, and the only thing that season three has rectified is that Sophie is no longer annoying us from afar … I’d wondered at some point last season just when she’d become the queen bee. Now the problem is that she’s around and pretending to be the queen bee … what? And I don’t know if the cases are different now, or the clients, but they’re no longer particularly enjoyable. I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet, but the country music one was painful.
I haven’t seen The Glades … no interest, I guess.
Debbie – Like I said above, I thought Covert Affair’s premiere was almost laughable. It made me think that the network was trying to replicate the success of In Plain Sight by using the show’s second season as a blueprint … the second season, which was awful. And a copy in general is less than, so a copy of a bad product? I could not believe it had made it on the air.
Modwild – You seem to agree with me more than not, or at least somewhat. ;) And I agree wholeheartedly about Henry Winkler.
I’ve been enjoying Psych … I never held it up on the same pedestal that many other people did, so if it’s falling short of that bar I’m not really noticing. I see it as a show that’s always swum along inoffensively.
I’m not not into Rizzoli & Isles … I’m “still trying” it. So far I find their relationship to be the weakest link, because it’s completely unclear whether they’re close friends, just getting to know one another, etc. And their chemistry is decent, at best. Hopefully that improves the longer they work together, but right now it’s not great.
Well, I’ve never seen IPS, so I didn’t perceive Covert Affairs as a copy of anything (yes I did — Alias, but I didn’t care! :-)).
Nice comment, but as usual you’ve got everything backward! I know that being wrong for so long makes being right hard to recognize, but I’ve got a guide for you. If you ever say anything I agree with, you’re right. Everything else is just wrongness!

Yes, I guess that’s what threw me … such a new experience!
Out of curiosity, how would you have come across such a guide yourself?
“Out of curiosity, how would you have come across such a guide yourself?”
Well you see, I was once an aimless and angry teen destined for nothing. Then one day I met a wise, old Japanese man who made it his life’s work to enlighten me. He taught me by saying funny things like, “Wax on. Wax off.” and I’ve understood the path to universal truth since then.
You want to learn? I have a couple of cars that could use some waxing. You might even get a movie deal!

You know? Not even remotely interested. Sorry! :)
