Diary of a Weeds Virgin – Why does nothing in this world make sense?

Wait, so is 'Weeds' just an alternate reality? Are we flashing sideways? As we near the end of season 5, I try desperately to figure out just what the hell is going on here.

Forgive me, because I feel as though perhaps my issue may be that I’m entirely missing the point of this show. Here I am, taking everything literally; looking at the events as if they exist in a world of which I am also a part, but now I’m reconsidering. Maybe this is one of those things that in the series finale, we find out that Doug just got really high and dreamt all of this. Because, you guys, how else can what happened between Andy and Nancy in that restaurant bathroom be explained?

Season 5, Episode 7 “Where the Sidewalk Ends”

It turns out that the woman who showed up at Esteban’s house, wasn’t his wife, but his boss. She basically owns Mexico, and it is her belief that marrying a foreigner is going to hurt Esteban’s political career. Seems reasonable enough, but things take a dark turn when Esteban sets up a home birthing room in the guest house, presumably for the purpose of having Nancy give birth with no witnesses or documentation.

Ordinarily, I would be disappointed in Andy if he started following Nancy around again, but in this case, it’s a little more than just cleaning up her mess again. Esteban seems intent on doing something nefarious, so it’s certainly fortuitous that Alanis Morissette agreed to get that baby out of her.

Meanwhile, the annoying cop is out via Internal Affairs, and Celia is trying to sell makeup. She really must have lost her mojo over the past few years, because I’m pretty sure that the old Celia could bully anybody into anything, yet this Celia sucks at sales. My main problem with the episode actually comes here, because the idea of Celia selling drugs is ridiculous. She’s seen what has happened to the Botwins, and there’s no way that she would go down that road.

Season 5, Episode 8 “A Distinctive Horn”

The Celia storyline continues to irritate me in this episode. Not only is she selling drugs, but she steals Silas and Doug’s inventory, which is just stupid. Everything on this show is going so well right now, but this storyline is really just dragging it down.

Little baby Botwin is going home, and Esteban is out. He refuses to sign the birth certificate, so Nancy, being completely lost on her own, puts Andy’s name down instead. By the end of the episode, the baby has a name (Stevie Ray), and is officially a member of the tribe. Esteban doesn’t like this, of course, but I’m kind of hoping we see less of him– I’m way more interested in the Andy as daddy storyline than I am in him.

Of course, Andy’s main reason for becoming a daddy seems to be impressing Alanis Morissette. They had a disastrous first date, but she’s interested enough in the drama to give him a second chance. I love that she’s sticking around (along with Lupita!), but I have a feeling that something bad may happen to her.

Season 5, Episode 9 “Suck ‘N’ Spit”

NO. No, no. No no no no no. No fucking way. This show is such bullshit sometimes, and it’s absolutely infuriating. I know how important a night out can be for a new mom, and I know that Nancy must be exhausted from her grueling schedule of never spending any time with her newborn son, but sweet Christ. If you didn’t pump and you’re engorged, you go the fuck home. The end. If you can’t hand express and you’re uncomfortable, GO HOME. It’s not that complicated, and what bothers me the most about it is that I do not believe for one moment that even Nancy Botwin, the stupidest person in the world, would have her brother-in-law suckle on her in a restaurant bathroom. That’s just fucking stupid.

Also, it’s annoying how we never really saw the pot club, which looked like it could have been interesting, and now it’s shut down. I already mentioned how annoying this Celia storyline is, and the fact that  pot club is sacrificed for it makes it even more irritating.

Esteban comes back to try to win Nancy back, and Shane gets caught in the cross-fire. I can only hope that this is what she needs to finally get away from him for good, but the previews for the next episode paint an entirely different picture. I will say, the ending is very compelling and makes me want to watch the next one, but I have a really bad feeling about it.

“That’s just fucking stupid.”

Welcome to season 5!

I completely agree with the pot club, Silas and Doug are the best things gonig for the show. Them growing in the woods lasted about a day, their pot club the same, it’s really a shame. Frankly I think Nancy should disappear and Silas and Doug get a spinoff show.

I thought it was all great.

There was so much eye-rolling involved when I watched season five. I don’t even know if I’m going to continue with this series. It’s a shame, because I really loved its early seasons.

I agree this season was by far the worst, but having watched the final episode and from what I’ve read is coming in the next season I have hope. All I can say is we’ve stuck with it through this extremely stupid season, so let’s see how season 6 goes. I don’t think it could sink any lower on the idiocy scale and we do need more Silas and Doug. Doug cracks me up.

They did the same idiotic thing (my boobs are full of milk, you have to suck on them!) on Nip/Tuck years ago, and I was rolling my eyes then… Its about sensationalism and nothing more.
