Emmy noms are out and some of my favorites made the list

New shows ('Modern Family'), plus some sentimental favorites ('Lost') and long-overlooked programs ('FNL') were included in this year's Emmy nominations.

While Glee fans are likely walking on air given that their show has been showered with 19 Emmy nominations, I’m personally thrilled by the love shown to some of my favorite TV shows — namely Mad Men, which got 17 nominations — and by the fact that Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton from Friday Night Lights FINALLY got Emmy props with best actor and actress nominations, though the series itself wasn’t on the best drama list as it certainly should have been.

And how ’bout The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien snagging a nom?!

While I was pleased with many of the Emmy nominations, I was shocked that Ed O’Neill, who plays the patriarch on Modern Family, as well as Rico Rodriguez, who plays O’Neill’s wise-beyond-his-years step-son Manny, weren’t nominated. Practically everyone else from the cast was nominated — all in supporting roles — so it came as a surprise that these two were left out of the party. Nonetheless, I hope that Modern Family cleans up in all the comedy categories and that Ty Burrell, who plays the awesome Phil, and Sofia Vergara, who plays Gloria, walk home with the acting awards.

Other Emmy shut-outs that surprised me: Grey’s Anatomy only got two nominations, both of which were for make-up. Grey’s Anatomy’s finale was among the best this spring, incredibly tense, dramatic and well done. At the very least I thought the show’s writers would get nominated for something. The same goes for Denis Leary’s Rescue Me, which had a strong season five, which was likewise overlooked. It seems as though Emmy voters, for one reason or another, shy away from this gritty, emotionally challenging drama.

I’ll be really curious to see how the critical powerhouse that is Mad Men will fare in the best drama category against Lost, which racked up a dozen nominations, including best drama and a best actor nomination for Matthew Fox, who I think gets unfairly dissed and I, for one, am happy to see that he got a nomination. Will the affection for this cultural touchstone of a drama overcome the griping (I’m among the gripers) about the controversial series finale?

Really glad to hear about the two FNL leads getting nods, but it’s too bad Zach Gilford didn’t get one as well. I just got done catching up a couple weeks ago, and Eric & Tami are probably my favorite married TV couple. And Zach does a great job consistantly with Matt, but “The Son” is probably his best amongst many quality perfomances he’s had.

I have to agree with you about Matthew Fox, he wa terrific this year. He and Terry O’Quinn had great seasons, especially their work together
