We’ve covered quite a variety of shows in the Webisode Clack column. There have been comedies, dramas, and sci-fi … featuring lesbians, vampires, gangsters, space doctors, ninjas, Canadians, and Brittney Powell’s boobs. (someone needs to make a show with Brittney playing a lesbian/vampire/doctor/ninja, from Canada) The sheer volume of ideas never ceases to amaze me. And that’s where we find ourselves again this week, with Missed Connections Live.
The show actually comes from a very simple place. Creator and star, Melissa Center, found herself somewhat enchanted by the missed connections section on craigslist. She wondered who these people were, and if the ads ever actually worked. Eventually, all the pondering led to the idea of bringing the posts to life.
Each episode finds Melissa playing the author of another post, and offering us her interpretation of just what it might have looked like IRL. The results run the gamut. One might be a little creepy, another a little sad, and some are just flat out funny. It’s a terrific idea, and if you have ever seen the missed connections section of craigslist, the possibilities are endless.
We’ve already had a brief look at how the idea can expand as well. For episode six, “Very Close On The F Train,” Melissa partnered with Brent Rose from 50in50 and fictionalized a possible outcome to one of the posts. The result was very cool, with a nice little surprise at the end. It leaves me very curious about just where this is all headed. What else does Melissa have up her sleeves?
And that brings us to the next bit. After funding the first ten episodes on a shoestring, Melissa is looking to expand and grow the show. She’s started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to make all sorts of improvements. You can read all about those plans at her Kickstarter page.
I’m a big fan of Kickstarter. Vivan and Heleya from We Are With The Band used the site as well, and it’s where I discovered How Do You Write A Joe Shermann Song. It gives you a very interesting look at things from the ground floor. And now is a perfect time to join in with Missed Connections. There are just a few days left, and watching the counter spin as time winds down is very exciting.
In addition to the Kickstarter site, you can also keep up with the show on the official website, check out other projects from L.B.M Productions, and of course follow Melissa on twitter. Here’s a look at “Fat F@#K” to get you started.
One final note, the word from Cell creator Mark Gardner is that there is a big announcement coming tomorrow afternoon on Indie Intertube. I have no idea what it is, but I can’t wait to find out.
