FlashForward – More reveals and a little history

After a climactic outing last episode, 'FlashForward' continued this week with a episode that was a little slower, but still contained some big reveals.

I was very curious heading into this week’s episode of FlashForward. Last week, the face of the show definitely changed. Noh survived past the date of his death, but Dyson Frost did not. With Alda escaping from prison, it would certainly appear that a new villain has taken the forefront. Of course, with thinking like that it would follow that Herzog wasn’t even in tonight’s episode. That doesn’t mean that there wasn’t some nice forward movement of the story, however.

This episode gave a lot of color to Janis’s history and decision to become a mole. I was really glad to see that at the end of the episode it was revealed that she as a double agent, working with Vogel and the CIA. Her motivations to start working for the evil organization behind the blackout were sketchy at best. It seemed like all it took was a pretty lady asking her to get her on board. The double agent reveal may not have been the most original turn of plot, but it was a welcome turn in my opinion.

It was interesting getting some more information about her flashforward, as well. I remember during the pilot thinking that she seemed upset or sad during the sonogram. Some had theorized that it was because it was going to turn out to be Demetri’s baby (true) and she was upset because he was dead (false). Instead, it was revealed this week that she will have complications with the pregnancy. However, it seems that she is too deep into the investigation and double secret undercover investigation to give her pregnancy the attention that is needs. Especially now that things seem to be coming to a head with the shady organization ordering her to kill Benford (we can only hope!).

Elsewhere in the episode, Olivia was being quasi-stalked by Gabriel, one of the experimental subjects of Frost. James Callis did a great job with the character. Last week, I was a little embarrassed to admit that I missed his appearance in the episode. I thought I just wasn’t paying attention, but then at the beginning of tonight’s episode, I realized that I just failed to recognize Callis as Gabriel. A true testament to his acting … or my stupidity. He also did an amazing job looking creepy in all of those old photos of Olivia.

I’m very curious to see what sort of a role that Olivia will play in the big picture. Clearly Gabriel thinks that she is important, but I just can’t see how she fits into the big picture. I’m eager to find out, though.

What are you looking forward to in the final few episodes of FlashForward?

Wait– what? When did we find out it was Demetri’s baby?

I’ve been disappointed with the show since it came back from hiatus (and I had been quite enjoying it before), so I’m glad that the last two episodes seemed to be getting back on track, at least in my opinion.

They were in Africa when she was ovulating and they got drunk together and had sex because she was upset that per the flashforward schedule, that was the month she was supposed to get pregnant. He thought he was dying, so figured it was no skin off his back.

Did we learn that they’d actually consummated that moment? I understood it as no.

I didn’t get the impression that it was Demetri’s baby either.

What I concluded from the combination of Janis’ assignment to get the ring and her orders to kill Benford, coupled with how close we’re getting to the day of the flashforward, is that she sent those two guys into Mark’s office that he sees in his flashforward. That would mesh with their reason for being there, and Vogel coming to the Benford house and saying “Mark’s dead,” in, considering what we now know, a means to maintain Janis’ cover with whoever she’s working for.

I understood why she would become a mole — money. If she feels no sense of patriotism, what would it matter to her if she was spying on the FBI?

I remember that the issue came up then (and remember thinking it seemed out of character for Demetri, give his engagement), but I didn’t realize that they actually went through with it. Thanks.

Didn’t she tell him, or try to tell him at his bachelor party that she was pregnant?

As I understood it, the only option that would result in her being pregnant was if she and Demetri did it in Africa. Now you have me second guessing.

When she dumped him in the cab when he was drunk, he was trying to say something to her about their relationship. Not sure what, but she walked off with “Don’t worry, I’m pregnant.” In retrospect I assumed Demetri was trying to apologize for not helping her out in the end. But you could definitely be right … I just had assumed it wasn’t his for whatever reason.

I thought that Demetri wanted to talk about that night to talk about his offer (ie, alleviate any awkwardness, given Zoe), and that she told him essentially not to worry about it, that the flash forward was coming true and she was pregnant anyway, since he knew that it meant a lot to her. Maybe she had time to do an in vitro appointment before she left to Somalia?

From the ABC.com recap of the episode a couple weeks ago:

“At his impromptu bachelor party, an inebriated Demetri tries to talk to Janis about that night in Somalia. She cuts him off by telling him that she’s pregnant just as the cab he’s in pulls away.”

hmm… Could be. Guess it’s at least a lot less cut and dry than I had assumed, but I would still be surprised if it wasn’t Demetri’s baby.

So isn’t Janis a TRIPLE agent? She was already a double agent (working covertly for Blackout Inc. while working for the FBI) but now we know she’s secretly working for the CIA playing the role of a mole who is playing the role of an FBI agent…

Didn’t recognize James Callis? Really? I recognized him immediately … and it was perfect casting.
