Dare I say, that after so much disappointment in the early and middle parts of the season that things are beginning to get interesting on FlashForward? To be fair, the show has always been good, in my opinion, when it has dealt with the mythology of the blackout and the conspiracy behind it. This week’s episode focused nearly entirely on this, and it was a really good episode. There was a nice balance of intrigue and resolution. As a plus, we barely had to listen to anyone whine through the whole hour.
In any case, there was a lot of interesting information put out there in this episode. I was sad to see Frost end up dead in tonight, because he was the most interesting thing to happen on this show since Simon. He definitely shed a lot of light on the nature and purpose of the blackout(s). Clearly he was part of a group that was, and is, looking into the future and perhaps trying to manipulate it. As we also saw, people who get to see that much of the future go a little mad. I wonder just how many people were involved in the original experiments. With Frost’s map leading to “the end,” were they trying to see into the future and prevent the end of the world? Interesting questions, many of which I’m nearly certain we will never get the answer to. Oh, well.
Then there was the matter of Demetri. Frankly, I was a little let down that after all the hullabaloo, he ended up alive at the end of this episode. Here’s a question: if you had two minutes or so to defuse a Saw-like death trap, would take a few seconds to stop and reflect on the gravity of the moment. “My hand. My gun.” Hey, Mark: Shut the hell up and save your friend!!! Stupid, stupid Mark Benford. Regardless, he was able to save his friend and partner. I suppose I’m glad that Noh was saved. I didn’t really want to see him dead. He’s a fine character, and should be far less annoying moving forward as he doesn’t have his impending doom to mope about.
Now there are going to be new villains (Alda being a prominent one, I’m sure) and more intrigue as we move into the final part of the season. Hopefully the show will be able to deliver more good episodes and fewer painfully melodramatic scenes.
Did you enjoy tonight’s episode? Are you glad Noh got a reprieve or were you rooting for a bloody end for the agent?
I hope this series gets a second season, but its extremely unlikely. But if they do, the producers and writers need to take on board all the fan criticism. Best thing about this episode was seeing James Callis. I’m glad Callis has signed up for an entire season of Eureka, an established, quality genre series. Funniest thing in this episode of Flashforward, was a tie between Joseph Feinnes’ acting and John Cho’s continued lack of chemistry with Gabrielle Union.
I agree, the death of Frost is really the death of an interesting character, perhaps to make way for James Callis’ character. It’ll be interesting to see if Callis, Dominic Monaghan, and Jack Davenport have any scenes together. Good actors in a bad series… Instead of making a spiritual successor to Lost, why not simply make an actual sequel / prequel series to Lost, and take the fans on a new adventure through the Lost universe? (in the same way that most BSG fans are exploring the BSG universe in Caprica and the proposed second BSG spin off, which I hope is a millitary space based series set in the same time period as Caprica).
