Community – Abed is a Goodfella

'Community' does 'Goodfellas'. I can't think of anything more brilliant. Maybe Annie's Boobs, but that's about it.

- Season 1, Episode 21 - "Contemporary American Poultry"

It seems as though every episode of Community has something to which you can point and say with great confidence, “that’s why this show is brilliant.” It makes you fall in love with the series all over again, and cements its status as one of the best shows on television. This week, that thing was the fact that they did the entire episode as a homage to Goodfellas.

Goodfellas holds a special place in my heart. During winter break my sophomore year in high school, my friends and I just about wore out a VHS copy watching it over and over again. I love it so much that, in my eyes at least, it surpasses even The Godfather as the best mob movie of all time. So having Community do its own version was amazing for me; mainly because using chicken fingers instead of piles of coke is slightly more palatable.

Speaking of chicken fingers, two quick things: I’m a vegetarian, so I’ve never had them; they’ve always looked pretty disgusting to me though. Is it actually possible for them to be that good? Also, shut up, Britta. Seriously.

But back to Goodfellas, I really thought this was just going to be a little joke that lasted for a couple of scenes, as is the case with most of Abed’s movie references. But the fact that they recreated everything, down to the music, was pretty impressive. I especially loved that Abed became the Henry Hill character. You don’t really get to see him in the position of power, so it’s nice to see the switch in the dynamic — even if Jeff’s ego means that the shift is short-lived.

As sophomoric as it was, I’ve got to say, “Annie’s Boobs” made me giggle. “Annie’s boobs might be in a ditch somewhere!” Other highlights for me included the continued use of Star Burns, the “Star-Gate” headline and accompanying explanation, and a possible love interest for Shirley. As much of a one-off episode as this was, I really hope that cute dreadlocked guy comes back for Shirley. She needs to get some action.

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 11, but I can tell you that chicken fingers can taste awesome if cooked correctly. And if they’re the only things at a school cafeteria that taste good the demand will be very high.

Seconded, although it was chicken patties on hamburger buns for us. Chicken fingers (especially with dipping sauces) would have been an order of magnitude more desirable.
