South Park – Facebook is TRON and Chat Roulette is dicks

'South Park' rolled a few recent, common trends into this episode, including Facebook, Chat Roulette and 'TRON,' and ... hey, who's this Kip Drordy kid who wants to friend me? Ignore!

- Season 14, Episode 4 - "You Have 0 Friends"

“Aw, you guys doing that stupid Facebook stuff again? Why are you guys in here wasting your time? We’re supposed to be out playing video games!” – Stan

Alright, so how long before at least a few people you know put up poor, pathetic Kip Drordy’s profile pic above as their Facebook profile picture? Someone already grabbed the static URL for it, so it’s only a matter of time.

This episode hit home here because my wife Deb utterly refuses to join Facebook. Now I’m afraid to go and set her up with one myself — she’d look horrible in a TRON helmet and sucks at Yahtzee.

I honestly had no idea that Facebook could take over people’s lives so much, but I’m not surprised. I’m sure South Park hit the nail on the head for some people. I also hear a lot about Farmville from Facebook and how addictive it is. Some people I’ve friended on Facebook try to lure me in with their offers of beets and carrots, but I’ll have none of it! Ignore! Now, hacking and slashing trolls and night elves? Now we’re talkin’.

Something that surprised me but definitely gave me a laugh-out-loud moment was bringing in Chat Roulette to the show. I thought that was a relatively new novelty, so seeing it tonight was a surprise. Thankfully in the five minutes I tried Chat Roulette, I only managed to see a pair of tits and no dicks.

With the Facebook references, Chat Roulette and the hilarious TRON tribute, this was an episode for the books. I’m sure “Kip Drordy” will be some sort of catch phrase before long, and “Ignore!” will be a commonplace word people use face-to-face when they want nothing to do with a person. man, I sure set myself up for a lot of comments with that word in it, didn’t I?

Oh, one last thing: I really want that Street Warrior poster in Stan’s bedroom.

Something else I meant to mention was the age of the kids on this show using Facebook. How many 7-year-olds are on Facebook?!

Yeah but it’s kinda hard to still believe that when the first time I saw an episode of this show was 13 years ago…

Also I don’t think there’s an age limit is there? I think it depends on whether there’s an alternative network for kids available. In Germany the lead Network is called “StudiVZ” (from “Student” which means College/University attendee and “VZ” for index) and the corresponding network for kids is “SchülerVZ” (Schüler = students in all school forms classes 1 to 13) – but there’s no real border. I know a lot of 20 year olds who have a SchülerVZ account and also use StudiVZ as well as Facebook now and with so many moms and dads joining FB it’s only a matter of time for the kids to get their own accounts too.

If it were easier to understand how to publish to different groups on FB I guess more kids would use it. So they usually have a network for their school friends somewhere else and use FB together with the rest of their (older) Family. That’s the way it is in my family.

“Thankfully in the five minutes I tried Chat Roulette, I only managed to see a pair of tits and no dicks.”

You are one lucky S.O.B. … all I ever saw were dicks and people I might want to chat with disconnected very fast :(

Yeah I had the same experience Kyle had on chatroulette. 20 dicks and one person who I actually had a conversation with. Oh and 500 nexts because I wasn’t a naked girl.

As for the episode’s depiction of facebook: spot on. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been yelled at for not responding to a wall post, not friending family members, not writing happy birthday on a wall (Because saying it in person doesn’t count anymore), and I got yelled at like Stan did for having no clue how to change my relationship status. The site has really consumed my generation and is getting to the older and younger ones now. Its even open in another tab on my browser right now so I better watch what I say before it sucks me into the system. I suck at Yahtzee.
