We’re staying with comedy this week, and taking a look at Party Girl Plus One. This is yet another show that was delivered to me through the magic of twitter. So, in the spirit of the show … For a good time, follow @partygirlplus1. I kid, of course, and I mean that in the nicest of ways. Because I’m already a fan of Jen and her exploits.
The show takes off from a very simple premise. After a divorce, Jen has to start dating again. A series of strange and awkward outings prompt her to start keeping a diary. Party Girl Plus One is our look at that diary, as each episode recounts another of the engagements. Fortunately, there will be no shortage of tales to tell. Jen’s action plan boils down to dating every single guy until she finds her plus one.
And it is quite a collection of stories. In just five episodes we’ve already seen a one night stand, a sommelier with a smell fetish, watched Jen wax her fun-bits, learned that foreplay is the new black, and witnessed her coming this close to a girl/girl experience. That last bit brings up another good point. Party Girl Plus One does make a great companion to Seeking Simone. Jen is just like Simone … only straighter … and less Canadian1. The show also shares a lot of the same qualities.
At it’s core, it’s a screwball comedy, as evidenced by episode titles like “Frequent Vagina Flyer.” And there are plenty of laughs to be had. But what really sells it is how you root for the main character. Despite her obvious flaws, you want Jen to succeed and find her plus one. Maybe not right away, because it is great fun watching the search, but it’s very easy to get caught up in her enthusiasm for the task at hand. Maybe the next guy will be the one.
Two thumbs up to star, and creator, Jennifer Dawson for that. Together with her team, she’s made a very funny show that manages to also have that little something extra that makes it special. I highly recommend it, and am now putting forth my request for the ultimate web series crossover, where Jen somehow winds up on a date with Simone. Please internet? I don’t ask for much…. You can find all the episodes at the Party Girl Plus One website. Here’s “Smell Fetish” to get you started.
1 Totally paraphrasing Renee’s acceptance of her Indie Soap Award.
Haha – love this series!! Thanks for the tip off, Brett. I hope that when PG and Simone go on their crossover date, the episode is called “Muff-tastic”.

Ha! You already have a title. And a very good one at that. That means I’m this much closer to getting the episode.
The shows really are quite compatible. I could totally see that smell fetish scene playing out with Simone and her latest internet pal.
