American Idol – Maybe Ellen DeGeneres should grow bangs, too

Big Mike Lynche is the only guy that pulled out all the stops during 'Idol's' Top 10 Guys episode.

- Season 9, Episode 15 - "American Idol"

Here’s what I’m thinkin':

What is it with the hair? The hair in the face, covering the foreheads? Somehow it’s affecting the singing of John Park, Alex Lambert and Tim Urban. It’s completely robbing all three of their ability to sing. (However, you did get a surprise when Simon tossed you that bone, Timmy.) Even Casey James’ blond locks mitigated his vocal abilities. And I like that guy. But not his performance during the Top 10 Guys edition. (And surprise, surprise … neither did Kara DioGuardi.)

It was a night of mediocrity.

Todrick Hall? He’s killing me. Emote no more, dude. Jermaine Sellers? You’re doing the same. Oh … and Jermaine? You’re gone come Thursday night.

Andrew Garcia? Every judge was right to rag on you. Even you said it in your tune: “Please give me something …” That was hideous, guy. Good thing it wasn’t a defining performance that could have gotten you the boot.

Aaron Kelly? Congratulations! You were the karaoke king of the night. It wouldn’t surprise me if you were heading out the door with Jermaine Thursday evening.

So … who’s left? Lee Dewyze. You didn’t do so badly. But here’s a piece of advice: Run down to the nearest store there on Hollywood Boulevard and nab yourself a belt before your next performance. We don’t want any drawers droppin’ while you’re climbing up those octaves.

The winner of the night was Big Mike Lynche. When I caught wind he would be putting some James Brown “It’s A Man’s World” through my television speakers, I inwardly cringed. That can be a difficult tune to conquer. I braced myself for involuntary muscle contraction.

But … what I got was pleasant, interesting and engaging. Dude, you were the hit of the night.

Now … will someone hold me back from throttling Ellen DeGeneres? You’d think she’d be able to contribute something to the mix. But, instead, she’s inanely cracking wise out of left field one moment and grasping desperately at straws trying to contribute anything during another.

*sigh*

Shoot me now.

On Ellen, I am a longtime supporter of her, but even I gave pause when Idol added her to the mix. I assumed with Simon on the way out they wanted someone as smart and cutting as him. Unfortunately, although I find Ellen’s in-between contestant comments incredibly witty, I also admit that due to her lack of musical background, it’s clear she does not have the vocabulary to comment on their musicality (or lack thereof).

Now, I’m gonna have to disagree with you. I thought she gave positive feedback–maybe not discerning, but good feedback on the performance aspect (not so much the musical aspect). I know, I know, it’s a singing show, but you’ve gotta have the whole package.

Before the season I thought I was going to cringe everytime Ellen opened her mouth and was ready to not give her even a smidgen of a chance. But I actually think she’s useful. (relevant) She’s honest even when it’s not so good and I wasn’t expecting that. I still don’t believe she know much about music however.

Gee wilikers … She sure is elfin like with the stick out ears and saucer blue eyes.

Big Mike is my current fav. I’m a little concern about him ending up with “a Daughtry” with regard to elimination because of his edge of cockyness.
