I may have spoken too soon last week when I said that there was no real strong villain this season. After watching this week’s episode of Damages, I think more than ever that Joe Tobin is a real scum bag. He may not be as demonstrably ill-behaved as Frobisher or Kendrick, but I’m hating him more and more every week. He strikes me as a sniveling, privileged, twerp who can’t handle that all his family’s money just disappeared. We’ve seen that he’s willing to go to sociopathic lengths to protect himself and the family, but I think it’s really all about the money. More than ever, I can’t wait to see Patty take this jack ass down.
Of course, Patty herself is no saint. I really thought she sent Alex to the prison for a conjugal visit. It wouldn’t have been out of character for Patty by any means, and I’m frankly a little surprised that it just ended up being a smuggling run of some fancy caviar. It’s going to be interesting to watch the relationship between Patty and Alex. It’s clear that Alex is willing to do just about anything, and Patty certainly won’t hesitate to ask for it. Patty is hard to read, but I think it’s clear that she doesn’t think Alex is going to be what she wants: Ellen. Indeed, Alex’s willingness seems to be turning Patty off.
It seemed like the majority of this week’s episode was spent building up Tom’s story, and placing him in the right place and state of mind to begin his fall. This was the first time that I really felt like there is a direction that is going to end with Tom dead in a dumpster. He is becoming more and more unwound as the stress of the case along with the loss of all his personal savings. Now he is determined to find the money and get what is due to him.
It was great to see Keith Carradine back in this episode. Every time I see him, I can’t help but think of Carradine’s amazing turn on Deadwood. He was barely recognizable as Bill Hickock. How did he not get any Emmy attention for that? In any case, I’m hoping that we get to see more of him with Glenn Close.
