This week’s episode of Damages ratcheted down the speed a notch from the previous two episodes, but that isn’t a complaint. I certainly didn’t think the show was going to keep up that pace for the entire season. That being said, I was slightly disappointed in this episode, as there weren’t any flashes to “six months later,” which is the bread and butter of the show. Of course it was chock full of Damages’ other piece of bread and butter: head games from Patty Hewes.
The victim of those head games in tonight’s episode was Leonard Winstone. In the end, Patty played him like a fiddle, getting him to lead her right to Danielle even as he denied her connection to the Tobins. The look on Winstone’s face when he looked up at the airport and saw Patty was priceless, and I have the feeling that it won’t be the last time we see it. Patty has a tendency to inspire that look in her opponents.
The more of Joe Tobin that we’re seeing, the more that he seems to be capable of some real bad things. He was ready to let Danielle die from a brain hemorrhage just to keep her quiet. Certainly there was a history between them, and learning that your mistress was cheating on you with your father can’t be fun to hear, but Joe is becoming more and more of a villain as the season moves forward. I have a feeling that we are going to see him become more desperate and pathetic as he struggles with the burden of the family. He’s already beginning to drink again. I think Patty may break him like a twig.
The rest of the episode was filled with Ellen and her family. Clearly there are a number of issues with the Parsons clan, and I hope they don’t get in the way of Ellen and her participation in the action this season. At the end of the episode she reached out to Patty, and I’m wondering if they are headed for a reunion. I would love to see these two characters going back at it. I think Ellen is one of the few people to ever dish it out to Patty. After all their history together, I don’t think Patty can really intimidate Ellen at this point either.
What are your thoughts on the third season of Damages so far?
