Where do they go from here? I can’t even begin to imagine what the big Sam / Dean showdown on Supernatural is going to look like, when we finally get there, but one thing’s for sure, as Brett said — it’s going to happen, somehow. What will drive both of them to say yes to Michael and Lucifer, to be their vessels? Let’s take a look at what we know and see if we can make some educated guesses.
Dean’s fighting fate pretty hard, yet in this most recent episode, Archangel Michael tells him that free will, well, isn’t. No matter what choices Dean makes, they will all lead him to the same place, and that’s to be archangel Michael’s condom. We’re also going to find out a bit more about the relationship between Dean and Michael in the 100th episode of Supernatural, coming up this spring.
I have a feeling someone Dean loves is going to be threatened and he’ll do it to save them. Bobby, maybe? I’d like to see him pulled back in as a central character sometime soon. Realistically, though, it’s going to be about Sam. One theme we’ve had running through the entire series is that Sam and Dean are each others’ weaknesses. Sam and Dean even talked about it a bit in “The Song Remains the Same,” and they realized that if they had to do it to save their mother, they’d say yes. I think this same philosophy can transfer over to the brothers.
Sam’s weaker, which makes it easier to picture his saying yes to Lucifer. What’s going to get him there though? Temptation, perhaps, through the form of demon blood? Nah, we went there last season, so I’m thinking Sam’s going to be looking at this as his true shot at redemption. Somehow, the guilt that he’s responsible for Lucifer’s freedom is going to be too much for him to bear and he’s going to say yes thinking that Dean will defeat Lucifer and Sam will finally be redeemed.
So who will win? If we tally it up, Sam’s died more times than Dean, unless you count each Dean death on “Mystery Spot” as one. But Sam has died more times because he is weaker. And let’s face it — we can’t really have Lucifer running free in Supernatural land, although as Dean says, the angels are bigger dicks than the demons are. Frankly, I don’t know who I’m even rooting for.
What I do know is that Eric Kripke and friends haven’t let me down yet and I know it’s going to be great. It’s also more than likely going to be something that I couldn’t even imagine dreaming up, which makes it all the more fun to speculate.

Oh you are going to be so in for it from Sam girls. Dean already said no to Zachariah when he threatened to kill Sam and Dean. I don’t think that is enough and Dean has his stubborn back up now and I think he will say no just to say it – troublemaker. Plus we have the unresolved AntiChrist storyline and I think that Gabriel needs to show that he has been redeemed and returns as an ally. I think we have a ways to go – but there are only 9 episodes left to wrap up the Apocalypse so they better get moving.
I think that Sam will end up saying yes first because, as pointed out, he is the weaker of the two. Dean knows that Lucifer in Sam’s demon-primed body will be huge trouble, and Dean will have no choice but to say yes as the only one who can defeat him. My theory, anyway.
I know the series was only set up for five seasons, but I really think they can milk this Apocalypse thing for another year. Mary is right- they still need to resolve the Anti-Christ storyline, and Castiel still hasn’t found, er, “located” God. I can imagine a finale with the boys saying yes and a sixth season fighting the battle royale. I hope so, anyway…
Going by the mythology set up so far, they both cannot say yes. If they do, the world ends. We have already seen Sam as Lucifer, so my guess is Dean will, at some point say yes, especially since Michael told Dean he would come out the other side intact. Sam wouldn’t survive (as far as we know). I just don’t think that is where the writers are taking us, but we will see.
I love the character of Dean. Dean is a no BS, take no prisoners kind of guy. Sam is obviously more powerful because Azazel’s blood is coursing through his veins. Sam guilt of betraying his brother, defying his father, and insatible thirst for demon blood will be his downfall. Dean, because he is so head strong, will fight until someone kilss him….literally! Dean is starting to get a wake up call. The talk he had with Michael in “The Song Remains the Same” and the revelation he receiced from the horseman Famine in “My Bloody Valentine” is starting to resonate. I agree with both Michael and Famine. Michael says that he cannot fight/change his destiny considering that EACH decision he makes draws im closer to saying yes. Famine says the he is impervious to his attacks because Dean is already dead inside. He has no father, mother, girlfriend, a brother he can’t trust and a father figure-like friend, Bobby, is so self-loathing that it is eating him up inside. Dean has already said that he is fed up with everything. If it wasn’t for Castiel, Dean would already be an empty vessel. I hope the writer astounds us with a deep and meaningful finale because if Eric Kripke is not coming back, I see the show ending in disaster if the show goes into a sixth season. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see Supernatural have the same lengthy run as Smallville, however, this storyline is designed to be a means to an end. The Antichrist child is still out there and undecided about his which side we will fight on. Gabriel is still pondering of the last words he heard from Dean, God is still M.I.A. (I don’t/didn’t believe that “God is dead” line we heard from Raphael for a minute), and we have yet to see the horsemen Death and Pestilence. These last few episodes will indeed be a nail biter.
I think that Sam as you all said will say yes because he will have no choice. In the episode of when they go to heaven, towards the end Dean threw away his amulet and Sam still says they can end the apocalpse together. Even Castiel say you son of a Bitch to god saying he believed in him. Sam will most likely have no choice to say yes to stop Zachariah’s new plan to stop Lucifer, Sam might believe that Dean will say yes as well so Dean and Michael can defeat Lucifer. Hopefully God will return soon Just as the Angel Joshua said and stop everything.
Dean is going to say yes first, simply because its something that’s unexpected. He’s a true servant of heaven, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to kill the Whore of Babylon. Which means, he’s already said yes in his heart. If Sam continues to say no, then Michael will have no choice but to destroy Sam. I don’t think there’s a way to permanently ban Lucifer from this dimension unless you get rid of his vessel. That ‘borrowed’ one has lasted a lot longer than I thought it would.
