I don’t know how else to sum up the end of last night’s episode of NCIS but as disappointing. And it’s not merely due to the fact that before he may or may not have kissed her, Gibbs knew that Ms. Hart (Rena Sofer) was Colonel Bell’s attorney and wasn’t necessarily on the up-and-up. Or that he had already made it clear that he knew she was gunning for him on her pro bono cases.
No, my disappointment lies in what that almost-kiss makes Gibbs: ordinary. It’s an age-old plot device to create romance where there was no chemistry or sexual tension whatsoever. Just because Gibbs made a redhead joke in her first appearance — alluding to his preference in women as exhibited by his four ex-wives — doesn’t mean that we didn’t also need to actually see something between them onscreen. All I got from them was pure, authentic hatred.
Saving the situation by saying that Ms. Hart is really working “undercover” for Bell doesn’t help, because it means that someone pulled one over on Gibbs. Saying that he knows she’s working for Bell and he’s playing along to catch her and Bell in the act doesn’t negate the fact that he’d actually need to sleep with her to facilitate that (and my problem with that isn’t based on anything puritanical). And saying that he knows what’s up and is going along because there’s nothing wrong with sleeping with a younger woman every now and again … well okay, but that does make him a bit of a dirty old man.
Those of you who were hoping to get more on last week’s potential romance were either disappointed, or handed another clue in the puzzle. Did the fact that no mention was made of what may have happened in Paris mean that it didn’t happen, or is it further teasing, getting us to lower our guard before the awkwardness starts next week? I’m hoping for the former, because consummation of this thing after all these years would be as bad as what I hear happened on Bones (or was that a dream or something?) or CSI.
Some fun stuff, as always:
Although it wasn’t quite enough to settle my unease over that ending. There better be a good explanation in there somewhere, Gunny.
While I am not wild about the Hart story line I definitely don’t hate it as much as the “hop on pop” arc CSI did s(till doing?) and the Dallas treatment on Bones was just plain insulting to the viewers.
I accept the Gibbs is human – the man was divorced 3 times but they have never played him as stupid. I am hoping that he is playing her just as much as she and Bell are playing him.
Was something wrong with my tv last night? In the previews it looked like something had crawled on Fornell’s face and died necessitating a call to animal control to remove it.

My son loves that book…. ;)
Fornell? Are you sure that’s who you mean here? Isn’t he dead?
Nope he is still alive. I double checked the show site and watched the preview and it definitely is Fornell.

Ah, so you mean in scenes from next week stuff? If so, I don’t watch them. Sorry can’t help on that! :)
Was there a bomb plot in this episode too? The previews seemed to suggest something along those lines, but there’s no mention of it here.
At minimum, McGee’s headset let him listen to the wedding service without disturbing his co-workers. The tuxedo and confetti were definitely for a webcam. I assumed the couple was recording the feeds from all their online guests for later viewing.
Oh, and how funny was it that Gibbs snipped the wrong wire? McGee could have at least flipped a coin like Guerrero did.

Bomb plot? I suppose; the cases usually don’t interest me all that much.
Well, yeah, but he had a mic in addition to the headphones, which is why I asked if he was playing a role. I just couldn’t guess what he’d be saying at the ceremony.
Gibbs is a daredevil that way! ;)
It’s possible McGee was saying stuff, or maybe the virtual guests were just cheering, to be broadcast on speakers at the wedding.
Then again, Elflord definitely needs that headset rig for his online roleplaying. He may just not have bothered to detach the mike, if it even could be detached.

That’s true, although I think he might have been covering the mic when Tony and Ziva were quizzing him on what he was doing, meaning it was on. But you’re right it might have just been all to make the virtual guests part of the authentic crowd.
