HIMYM returns to its heyday with ‘The Perfect Week’

- Season 5, Episode 14 - "The Perfect Week"

“Just because a man talks about a fictional character a lot on a first date doesn’t mean he’s not husband material.” – Lily to Robin
“Sasquatch is not fictional.” – Marshall

I know, I can’t believe I’m actually reviewing How I Met Your Mother again, either. What’s more, I’m about to say really great things about it — two strange things in one night. Will wonders never cease? Because with “The Perfect Week,” Bays and Thomas remind us why we all watch this show in the first place.

Didn’t this episode remind you of the likes of season two’s and three’s “Swarley”? “Slap Bet“? “The Bracket”? It was tightly written, circled back around on itself to make the most of the jokes (Cook Poo anyone?) and the biggest surprise of all — Lily was actually funny.

Yes, you read that right — I enjoyed Lily in this episode. The toothbrush thing was totally gross, but the whole jinx thing was priceless. First, she said, “the perfect week.” Then, she said there was no such thing as a jinx. She Canada-ed up the Yankees analogy for Robin, and then when she realized she may have jinxed Barney, she literally took one for the team by throwing herself on the floor of the bar, in an attempt to distract Barney’s mark from the Yankee. Everything about Lily worked for me in this episode.

One thing I was a little nervous about were the poo jokes. I’m no snob, but when you are bombarded by poo jokes, you can’t help but think about some very un-funny shows: According to Jim, Two and a Half Men, The Benny Hill Show. But they pulled off every single one of the poo jokes in true Bays and Thomas fashion. From an honorable mention to Seymour Butts and Hugh Jerection, to Cook Poo being “down in the dumps,” I giggled at them all. The icing on the funny cake was when there was a takeout order for Miss Poo: “A number 2 for Cook Poo.” C’mon — inspired.

I will end with the perfect line in a spoof-of-sports-interview-shows show: “The stats, they really speak for themselves. Over 200 women spanning six continents, 17 nationalities, 74 sexual positions, and not a single fatty — impressive.”

What do you think — was HIMYM back tonight?

I know he’s a womanizer, so is it bad that I would still, even knowing all he’s done, have his awesome, legen(wait for it)dary babies? Yes, it’s true.

But seriously folks (I was serious, but moving on), the show last night was pure gold. Although, I didn’t find Lily as funny as you did. At least not ALL the time. When she was continually bothering Barney about his job I wanted to slap her. The rest of the time, she was bearable.

I absolutely loved the hockey analogy, and literally laughed out loud when the Yankee said he liked hockey better. The look on Robin’s face and her response were priceless.

“How about Lavender?”

“How about not?”

Everything on this episode was perfect. Too bad it can’t be like this every week :-/
