Well, what do you know…. After I wrote the post about five reasons Jennifer’s Body should become a TV series, Keith and I were pretty excited about the prospect. Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Supernatural? Admit it — you’re excited too.
When we heard Diablo Cody was at the TCAs, along with our friends at TV Squad, we decided to see if we could get in a question to her, asking her thoughts about Jennifer’s Body: the made-for- TV version.
It seems that Ms. Cody had never heard the idea or even thought of it herself (I am quite the divergent thinker, apparently), but she immediately embraced it. I think I like that Diablo Cody, I like her very much.
My favorite part of the mini-interview was when she made the perfect analogy between Buffy the Vampire Slayer, hit TV show, crappy movie: “This could be the perfect metaphor then.” How real that she can make fun of her box office flop, while aspiring to the heights of Buffy. I wonder if Diablo Cody would like to join me for lunch, and a trip to the mall?
She had some different ideas than I did, though, about what the series could be about. Cody suggested exploring the relationship between Needy and Jennifer more, in a prequel type series. I’d like to see Needy continue her murderous rampage of ridding the world of evil, one demon (or occult worshiper) at a time. Maybe Cody and I can discuss this in the fitting rooms at Macy’s.
I feel pretty proud that I came up with the idea all by myself and that Diablo Cody hadn’t even thought of it. Although I guess when your movie fails at the box office, the last thing you think about is making it into a TV series. Unless you’re Joss Whedon….
I think a “prequel” idea is fine in this case, but Jennifer still has to become possessed. She can be an Angel/Spike/Willow type of good/bad and together she and Needy can kick some ass while trying to figure out how in the hell it all started and how to stop it. Very Buffy like if done well, and it can have the same comedy/drama mix. Hope she takes the bait!!
