Glee’s got the formula for a season two pick-up

The CliqueClack offices received a press release from FOX today, announcing that Glee‘s been picked up for a second season. No surprise there, and certainly no disappointment from this fan and Gleeks ’round the world. Incidentally, they also announced a Glee nationwide open casting call beginning in February that will be turned into a multi-part special. I’m thinking American Idol auditions meets Who’s Line Is It Anyway?….

It got me thinking about all of the wonderful little parts of Glee that combine to make the perfect formula for success, kind of like an algebra problem. I wonder which equation was the one that earned Glee its pick-up.

Comedy + music + romance + teenage angst + the thrill of competition = pick-up

Fake pregnancies + teenage pregnancy – Terri Shuester = pick-up

Guest star power = Kristen Chenoweth + Victor Garber + Josh Grobin + Eve = pick-up

Quirky characters = Sue Sylvester + Principal Wiggins – Terri Shuester = pick-up

Gay boy + man-whore + female whore + grandmother / toddler + other Asian = weird glee club = pick-up

Perfect casting = Matthew Morrison + Jane Lynch + Lea Michele + Cory Monteith = pick-up

Spontaneous song-bursts + choreographed performances + dream-like sequences + football players dancing = pick-up

Push It + Don’t Stop Believin’ + Proud Mary / Jump + You Can’t Always Get What You Want + Bust a Move = pick-up

As you can see, math was perhaps not my strongest subject in school, but I’m pretty sure one of these equations comes close. Brett would probably go with the “good ratings = pick-up” equation, and maybe it really is that simple. I like to think that the unique qualities of the show had something to do with it, though.

The full press release is in the second page of the post.

Or maybe the promise of the guest stars in the second half of the season:

Olivia Newton-John
(more) Kristn Chenoweth
Idina Menzel

Oh, and Sue Sylvester singing = brillance

I think Sue Sylvester alone ensures this show’s continued well-being. Fortunately, I like the rest of it just as much. It’s sly, irreverent, black-hearted, and joyful.

I’m like you, happy, but not surprised. The writing (Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk) is just fantastic, filled with quick repartee. The song numbers are tight, and the kids are TTT–too terribly talented! In fact, I’d give both pinky toes (I don’t really need them, right?) to be able to sing like Lea Michele. I bet, if she tried real hard, she could hit notes that only dogs could hear. In a good way. And to bring in the 35 plus set (I refuse to say the word Cougar) and their advertising dollars, is the yummy Matthew Morrison. He IS in his 30’s, so we don’t have to feel icky. Can’t wait til April!
