It was high time for Trip to take a fall

- Season 3, Episode 12 - "The Debarted"

Trip takes a fall

I mentioned last week how little a fan I was of the whole Trip/Serena pairing. The whole thing just feels wrong, on so many levels. Unfortunately, it’s not like I’ve got Josh Schwartz or the rest of the writers’ room on speed dial. Or Twitter even. Heck, I don’t even have carrier pigeons that could make it to LA from where I live. At least I can be happy that it looks like things have come to an end.

First, lets talk about the whole age thing. If I remember the details from my marathon Gossip Girl catch-up session last month, Trip is 26 years old. Except he can’t be 26 years old, as to serve in the US Senate, one has to be at least 30. Which means either the writing team didn’t do their homework, or they don’t mind writing an 18 year-old dating someone who is 12 years older. Either way, its not a ball game I’m interested in watching.

Mostly, though, what bothers me about Trip is that he is so weak minded and weak willed. Love is love, and if that’s what he shared with Maureen, as weird as it may have been, then that’s one thing. Needing her to define his relationship with Serena is another. The topper, however, was going to her in the crisis instead of just calling 911. It wasn’t too many weeks ago that we were to believe that the good and honorable Trip was leaving his wife because of her underhanded election strategies. Which Trip was Serena going to be getting?

Neither, though, are worthy of her. I’m not one riding the “I HEART SERENA” bandwagon, but I like her character, and Blake Lively’s performance well enough to want to see her challenged by a potential mate. Frankly, Trip just doesn’t measure up.

Other observations:

  • The whole thing was just a little too shades of Chappaquiddick for my tastes … it’s obviously not a direct analogy, but too close for me
  • I really liked the shot of Lilly sitting in the closet
  • The look on Chuck’s face when Bart’s hand first hit his shoulder is one of the reasons Ed Westwick will be a star for years to come
  • Do we really need another manufactured wedge between Chuck and Blair? They’re getting worse than manufactured wedges between Serena and Blair! Though, it’s hard to complain about a manufactured wedge that ends with such a wonderfully played scene between Chuck and Blair
  • I really like how Nate is written so that he can realistically be a friend to both Dan and Chuck
  • I really was liking how Maureen was written, at least until she dropped the dime on Lilly
  • Was that supposed to be a character we recognized with Rufus at the end?

the girl with Rufus at the end was the one who greeted him with way too much information at the meeting Lily sent him to.

I just want to know why Gossip Girl was drunk at the end of the show. She said that Sinatra sang, “New York, it’s a hell of a town,” but he didn’t. That’s not in the lyrics of New York, New York. The closest is when he calls Chicago a toddling town.

Maybe I’m wrong but I was under the impression that Trip was elected to the US House of Representatives. The minimum age for a Representative is 25.
