Any guesses for Dexter’s finale?

- Season 4, Episode 11 - "Hello, Dexter Morgan"

Dexter

I caught tonight’s episode a couple of weeks ago, so I’ve had a bit of time to think about it. First of all: wow! The final scene of the episode was jaw-dropping, and with only one episode left to go in the season — yes, ONE episode! — we’re left to wonder how in the hell this could play out. However, for anyone picky about spoilers, the episode title was a dead giveaway for what was to happen.

As usual for Dex, he makes some small but critical mistakes in providing the decoy for Mitchell, the man once known to us as Trinity. He made it perfectly clear to Mitchell that he’s hiding something, though covers it up with a lame bribery excuse, one that Mitchell seems to see right through. This is a man who’s had a lifetime of covering up and lying about his true intentions, so we’re seeing how it takes one to know one.

What’s not year clear, though, is whether Mitchell has a clue as to Dexter’s true intent. He’ll quickly figure out that it’s not all about money, and seeing as he hasn’t had any time to dig up Dexter’s murderous past as leverage, what’s going to happen now? Mitchell is standing toe-to-toe with Dexter, in the belly of the beast, and it appears at first glance that Dexter has the upper hand … or does he?

Dexter could threaten Mitchell on the spot, saying he’ll cry out that Mitchell’s the true Trinity killer. Not a likely scenario. Even if it’d take a simple “test his DNA” from Dexter, there’d be a lot of questions as to why Dexter knows this, among other things. However, he could clearly say something like Mitchell just confessed to him, and then it’s left up to Mitchell to prove Dexter’s lying. As far as we know, Mitchell has nothing on Dexter at all — everything he’d say about Dexter would sound crazy, including the falsified name. Then there’s the question of where Mitchell got the visitor’s badge, where they’d quickly find he’d not legally obtained one, raising more suspicion his way.

The thing is, Dexter really does have Mitchell over a barrel here. The only reason Dexter wouldn’t cry out that Michell confessed or threatened him is that he still wants him all for himself. Even after all that’s happened and Dexter’s identity has been outed, he still wants Mitchell on his table. So, assuming that’s the case, how could this possibly turn out? Seriously, I’m stumped.

I’m assuming Dexter will tell Mitchell to step outside. What happens there is anyone’s guess, but it’s likely something will distract Dexter into turning his head, allowing Mitchell to slip away again. Then it will only be a matter of Mitchell quickly tracking down Dexter’s family. However, I still don’t see how Dexter wouldn’t have plenty of time to just keep a tail on Mitchell and confront him somewhere else. Again, it only makes sense if something pulls Dexter away, like a plea from Deb or from his superiors. Even then, though, this would be a perfect situation for lying to them with a “I can’t — my wife’s in the hospital!” Deal with the fallout later.

Alright, so let’s talk Batista and Laguerta quickly, for a moment. Firstly, kudos to them for thinking on their toes and finding a loophole for their situation. However, there’s really no way this is going to end well. Once they are finished, there’s just no way they’ll be able to work together. Then it’s just a matter of time before one of them leaves, so the question is: how? Gosh, remember when Laguerta had a thing for Dex in season one? Wow.

Any guesses for how it will turn out? Will Mitchell see the other side of prison bars or the underside of Dexter’s scalpel? Will anyone else bite the big one?

One final note: did you ever notice Dexter seems to wear the same shirt to every kill, including the O.J. Simpson-like gloves that are too small for his hands? I guess having one shirt to do all of his dirty work makes it easier to keep track of.

That’s one thing that’s always annoyed me about Laguerta- the writers haven’t seemed to find her character. In season 1 she is all over Dex, and that has a reason: she has a major crush on him in the book. But as anyone has read the book knows, that storyline was resolved and the characters stayed consistent throughout the rest of the books

The writers on the TV show seemed to found Laguerta’s character in the book Laguerta (the liking Dexter part included), then tried taking her in a completely different direction. The result? Her character seems the most wishy washy on the show. Between each season her character seems to be different. Last season she was borderline lesbian, and this season she is, well, married to a man. Not only that, the writers started them straight into the relationship in episode 1, which made it even harder to get into

The writers needed a side story this season. Problem is, they chose the worst character to make one about. And the viewers didn’t like it

If one of them has to go, keep Batista. The writers did a good job developing his character last season, and in previous seasons. Between the episode where Dex had to carry him home and find out he was separated and the episode where he tried to purchase a hooker, his character outshines Laguarta

On another note…

Dex once again makes a spur of the moment kill, and worse yet, a kill that seems out of character with the rest- it didn’t seem like he was killing to feed his dark passenger. I doubt it will have any long standing implications on his character, but I do find it interesting

Keith, my jaw did not drop at the end of this episode, but my eyes got very big. WOW. I just love this show and can’t wait to see what happens Sunday night. I do believe Dex must kill Trinity. It is the only thing that would make sense to me. It is what Dexter does and Trinity needs to be stopped.

I think that Dexter will end like Brad Pitt in the movie “Seven” … he’ll get his chance to finish off Trinity, but as he finishing him off, Trinity will mention that he has a “surprise” for Dex. Dexter’s son Harrison will end up dead before Dex can save him. This death will motivate Dex to hunt other serial killers and will be the driving force for next season. How his wife and the remaining kids handle it will make for a good start to next season. Who knows Cody could become the next generation Dexter and his sister could be a future “Deb”.

Well, it’s titled ‘ The Getaway ‘ …. so who gets away? Trinity, from Dex, or Dexter, gets away with murder?
Really, I have no clue where this one is going, except I have a bad feeling about Rita’s longevity.

Dexter’s “uniform” is definitely part of the ritual, just as the plastic wrap and the cut on the cheek and the knife to the heart, etc.
