We have talked about the intern carousel on Bones a couple of times now. While most people are enjoying the change of pace each week, I actually would appreciate a little consistency. The storyline tonight with Arastoo Vaziri proves my point. His secret came out of nowhere, and really didn’t feel necessary.
Mr. Vaziri — if IMDb is correct — has been a member of the team for four episodes now. He has, until now, claimed an Iranian background, having (relatively) recently moved to the States. Creating a story that he had been faking his accent really serves little purpose other than just to confuse the background of a secondary character.
Don’t get me wrong; the story that explained why Vaziri lied to his co-workers was logical. Constantly having to justify his religion to his scientist colleagues would get old, very quickly. Hiding behind a persona that would seemingly be more protected from that scrutiny makes sense. Unfortunately, the whole storyline just felt out of place.
I like that we are getting to know the interns better. Wendell got the spotlight, and now with Vaziri’s storyline, I’m sure that we’ll be learning more about each of the group. I am all for back story and character development, but I think the writers swung and missed on this try.
On a lighter note, Parker’s quest for a new girlfriend brought the funny. Angela and Booth does not make a lot of sense to me, but it was obviously going to end with Parker sitting with his dad and Bones. Of course Bones was really going to get to the bottom of things, and helping out when it turned out Parker
Other stuff:
The whole “She’s a therapist” – “She’s an anthropologist” bit very funny to me. When you look at it more you realize that one of the subplots was Brennan against the therapists this evening.
What I don’t get is Hodgins harshness towards Vaziri and his religion. I would have thought that, despite his paranoia and conspiracy talk, Jack was a pretty open minded type of guy.
What you interpreted as harshness I interpreted as lightness. That is, he was comfortable enough with Vaziri and Islam to be jokey about it.
It creates an undeniably intelligent religious man that Bones can respect and therefore allow her a way to find understanding and not find Booth’s religious leanings to be a deal breaker when she decides to hook up with him.

I think that Vaziri already was an undeniably intelligent religious man that Bones can respect. Plus, I think she holds Booth in the same regard, independent of his beliefs.
But you raise an excellent point that this will (hopefully) layer into the eventual Bones/Booth relationship.
It’s a big stretch, but I’m trying.
It was supposed to fit into the larger theme of the episode that things aren’t always as they seem. People are different in the suburbs, why Parker wanted his dad to have a girlfriend, and that he was faking his accent. I also wonder if it will come up again during one of the religious discussions between Booth and Bones.
A asked the same question, what a stupid episode. The “writers” of Bones are horrible, they write episodes that could fit into any season and really have no growth or continuous flow. Last season with Angela and her on again off again on again non girlfriend just was a mess. The show is fun at times, but ehhh…

Oreo: I don’t care what anyone says, I still say there MUST have been episodes shown out of order for the whole Roxie/Angela storyline to have gotten that jacked up.
I think the whole accent thing was an obvious retcon. The writers basically rewrote his backstory so we can take the character more seriously. They must like the actor and have plans to keep his character around for a while longer.
The plot was a little over the top, but it worked. I must admit I am far more interested in the Vaziri character now that he’s not a stereotypical joke.
