Everybody’s talking about the return of Thursday night destination television — I don’t know what’s being broadcast where the rest of you live, but in my house, things are so dead that I was able to screen the premiere of Cold Case last week while waiting to watch The Office tape-delayed. DEAD.
I’ve gotten the chance to screen a number of these unfinished, rough cut products, but most don’t leave it difficult to watch the episode, just unusual. Did you know that the flashing date at the beginning is about the last thing they add to an episode before it airs? It was clear the premiere was a “cold” one, but we had to guess at the year — that was just a bit odd. The most jarring detail missing was that the sound hadn’t been equalized yet; most anything that took place outside was tough to discern.
But it would have been hard to miss either the great music (thank you, Mr. Ray Charles) or Lilly (Kathryn Morris) on a mission as her would-be killer from last season’s finale, Moe Kitchener (Daniel Baldwin), went through his bail hearing.
The case itself was of tertiary interest — a woman presumed to have gone overboard on a 1966 Atlantic crossing is found dead in the engine room … the friend did it! — but that’s generally the case on this show. It was nice to get some supporting cast time — Kat (Tracie Thoms) and ADA Curtis (Jonathan LaPaglia) appear headed for romance — but of course it was Lilly who played the primary in this, a continuing saga from season six.
I know she’s mad, and we all know how determined and driven she can be, but stalking this guy? I’m not saying I’d be comfortable with the guy who tried to run me off the road running around, but I didn’t imagine her stalking him, and yet making him aware of her presence at every turn. Considering how pale Morris is, in the right light she could probably convince him that he’s being haunted!
I wonder just where this story is going, however. Will Lilly become so unhinged that she actually attacks, or even goes so far as to kill, Kitchener? I can see it, but I can’t. Lilly’s a good cop, and I think she has faith in the justice system. At the same time, he attacked her, which makes this personal, and I honestly think she’s just as much scared as she is angry. You know, if only she’d let someone in — Scotty (Danny Pino) and/or Stillman (John Finn) would be nice — she would in effect let us in as well.
Lilly is a really interesting character, arguably as deep as a certain other female detective from Los Angeles, and I think we, and the show, could use more than just “mysterious” from her. That would also give us more of her fellow squad mates, which is only a good thing in my book. Just a thought for the writers.
Anyway, season seven is upon us. Will it be cold, or lukewarm?… Only time, and a metric thermometer, will tell.
