All right, everyone! I hope you’ve cleared your DVRs and TiVos of all those Housewives of Atlanta episodes, the selective Daily Show programs from three months ago, and all the Eurekas you recorded during the Viewer Picks marathon of a few weeks ago. According to my sundial, the Fall 2009-2010 season begins in earnest tonight. And, if you only own one digital recording device that can only mean one thing: DVR Emergency!
Yes, once again you need to peruse the TV schedules and select only those shows that you will absolutely watch sometime in the next nine months. This week is particularly bad since 1) a majority of shows are premiering, and 2) many of these shows are offering extended premieres to kick off the season. Other than Saturday, you probably won’t get a break from DVR scheduling either, thanks in part to all the summer shows still running on cable. Needless to say, the term “hosed” seems adequate.
Take tonight’s schedule, for example.
Here’s what’s coming up tonight;
So, the most important question is how you’re dealing with this, other than having a nervous break down or not watching anything at all? In the Keller household it’s pretty simple. We have House going at 8:00, then Accidentally, Two and a Half Men, and Big Bang Theory kick in at 8:30. The 10:00 pm slot is taken up by The Rachel Zoe Project.
Have you been able to think out your strategy for this evening, as well as the rest of the week? If so, let us know.
I have a DVR box in the living room and a tv/vcr combo in my office. They’ll both be getting a workout
Monday –
DVRing House and Heroes on the HDTV in the Living Room. Taping in another room – HIMYM, Big Bang. Watching HIMYM live while taping then walking into the living room to watch House slightly delayed from live broadcast in order to speed through the commercials. I dropped Dancing with the Stars and anything on cable repeats – so I’m DVRing Top Gear at 11pm to watch on Sat.
Tuesday –
DVRing finale of Warehouse 13 while watching The Biggest Loser over at a friend’s house. DVRing the Forgotten and the Good Wife to see which one I’ll pick up going forward.
Wednesday –
Watching So You Think you Can Dance at a friend’s house. DVRing Glee, Modern Family, Top Chef and Eastwick (giving that one a shot).
Thursday –
DVRing – FlashForward, Survivor; Fringe; The Office; The Mentalist; Project Runway.
Watching Live at a friend’s house – Survivor, Greys Anatomy
Friday –
DVRing – Psych; Medium; Numbers; Law & Order – prob. watch them during the day Sat. or Sun.
Saturday –
DVRing – Robin Hood (BBC America); Moving Up (watching delayed at a friend’s house). Watching Season 1 of 24 – catching a friend up slowly to the wonder that is Jack Bauer.
Sunday –
DVRing – Dexter (at the later repeat time)possibly Bored to Death as well at a later repeat; Amazing Race; Desperate Housewives; Brothers & Sisters; Mad Men – possibly flicking to Simpsons and Family Guy during commercials.
I watch most stuff on a delay lately so I can bypass commercials. Either way – it’s a full week of tv. Gone are the nights of Netflix catching me up on shows and movies. :.-(
Just went through this week and set my DVR. Only real problem is Thursday. Just too much good stuff on that night. Looks like I will be streaming some of those shows. Guess I could always pull out the VCR if needed.
AT&T U-verse is looking good right now, which ironically (or good marketing) I received a mailer on today.
Once the cancellations start, it will be much easier. What will be the first to go?
“Only real problem is Thursday. Just too much good stuff on that night.”
Really, like what? I’ve got The Office, Grey’s Anatomy, and 30 Rock. Aside from trying a new show or two, that’s all I see on that night.
Supernatural, you cold, cold man…. ;-)
…Right … I meant that’s what I had BESIDES the shows that, to repeat their names, would be stating the obvious…. :-)
Bones, Fringe, FlashForward, Grey’s, Private Practice, Mentalist, Supernatural
Maybe CSI, Community
I had posted my schedule on the “. . . Guide to the 2009-2010 Fall Season” post the other day, but I’ll post it here, too. Busy, busy, busy!

Heroes sailed a long, long time ago. Today is not bad for our house — House and Big Bang and HIMYM and Castle. Thursday is a tough one for us as we like the Office, Supernatural and Grey’s. That’s not even looking at anything new. We often look to see if any of those are replayed later in the week. CW used to be really good about replaying Supernatural early Sunday evenings, but their little pay for play experiment last year killed that. So we end up catching Supernatural through other means, since they never seem to use OnDemand, either.
I’m a freshman at college this year, and strangely enough, DVR’s are not a standard Dorm amenity. So basically I’m panicking. Also, I’m watching a lot of online TV.
Pretty easy this season, due to show deaths and cable half-seasons. DVR as much as possible, watch live whenever necessary (only 1-2 conflicts).
Monday: Heroes/Chuck, The Big Bang Theory
Tuesday: Warehouse 13, NCIS, NCIS:LA, The Forgotten
Wednesday: Glee, Eastwick
Thursday: Bones, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Community, The Mentalist
Friday: Sanctuary, Smallville, Wizards of Waverly Place, Psych
Saturday: BLEACH x 2, Legend of the Seeker
Sunday: Drop Dead Diva
On a related note, how about the quick relief that comes after trying what ends up being a stinker, and crossing it off your conflicts list? So far Community, Bored to Death, and Accidentally on Purpose got the quick cut in my house. It’s shocking how bad some of this stuff is that makes it all the way to the fall season.
That is nice when you can cross something off. I seem to be the only one that liked Accidentally on Purpose. I went into it not expecting to laugh, but I did. Maybe it was just a case of low expectations, guess I will have to wait until next week to find out.
For me, Jenna Elfman failed to meet my “lowered expectations.” I kind of wanted to enjoy her, because I love Thomas Gibson on Criminal Minds, so if I can forgive his Greg…. But when she started rubbing her nipples? Bye!
Yeah, I’ve been reading troubling things online about The Forgotten and Stargate Universe, so they might not be long for my list. Eastwick is also uncertain, but I like the actors on all three shows, so it just remains to judge the writing.
