There are a lot of exciting things happening in the web series world. You have an ever increasing list of productions, tackling all manners of style and genre, and actors with big TV and movie credits jumping into the fray. That’s all great. The thing that I find most interesting though is how quickly the level of production has grown.
This week’s pick, Lumina, is another great example of just how good a web series can look. It’s absolutely gorgeous. From creator Jennifer Thym, Lumina is shot on location in Hong Kong, with the RED One. There is no part of Lumina that makes you think it is somehow inferior because of its web based heritage. Of course, putting pretty pictures on the screen will only get you so far. Thankfully, the story propelling those pretty pictures along is very cool.
Our main character, Lumina (Juju Chan), lives a lonely life, despite being surrounded by her millions of neighbors in Hong Kong. And then one day, girl meets boy. Just one problem though … her new friend, Ryder (Michael Chan) exists in a different realm. Lumina can only see him in reflective surfaces. Initially, this has the feel of an epic love story. The mind jumps to how these two, separated by their different worlds, can be together. But it’s so much more twisted than that. Before too long, we’re introduced to Eben Sanchez (Jacob Ziacan), a mirrorspy. He warns Lumina to be wary of those in the dark realm.
Eben is part of the Mirrorati, an organization that controls the flow of information between the realms. It all gets much more complicated from there. What initially looked like a beautifully shot love story quickly turns to a dark fantasy taking place between realms. And nothing is what it seems. What are the intentions of the Mirrorati? Who else is making contact across realms? How does Lumina figure in to all of this? It’s a fascinating setup for a story, and now is the perfect time to get on board. The series is set to run 9 episodes, and the first three are available now.
You can watch them at the official Lumina site. It’s also worth mentioning, that the incredible production extends to the website. It’s very well done and has a ton of information about all of the various characters, the actors, and the team behind it all. Here’s the official trailer, to give you an idea of what to expect.
Thanks for the clack!! ;)
