Last year’s season finale was … you could say intense. Izzie’s season long battle with cancer looked to be coming to an end, as she was flatlining after surgery, the Chief and Bailey fighting to save her, despite the DNR she’d signed (if I continue to do Grey‘s posts here at CliqueClack, I’ll have to call Webber by his name … In my television watching world, there is only one “The Chief”). Her best friend George was also in peril, as most of the rest of the staff was working on him moments after discovering that the heroic John Doe they’d been working on was their friend.
I’ve seen the first episode of the season, and I lived to tell about it (and tell you who else may, or may not have, lived). Let me lead with a warning, because BIG HONKING SPOILERS AHEAD! I’m going to tell everything … up to and including how the world ends, so if you don’t want to know, turn back now.
I’m serious. Stop reading now.
Who was going to live or die has pretty well been spoiled on the internets most of the summer, even confirmed by the network in June, but I figured I would do my due diligence and make sure that all of our loyal CliqueClack readers were adequately prepared. Here’s the scoop: The spider dies in the end. And by spider, I mean George. Shonda Rhimes may have not always known what to do with Dr. O’Malley, but I really liked the way he left the show. 007, as he was known, didn’t always appear as the most likely hero, but jumping in front of a bus to save another’s life is exactly something George would do.
Izzie, however, lives to fight another day. Sometimes, I don’t get Heigel, and hope the things that I hear about her aren’t always true. The whole “my character wasn’t written well enough to be nominated for a Emmy” was a bit whiny, but at the same time, I understand the message if not the medium. Jane reported at TV Squad about some hi-jinks this season, which is exactly the kind of drama everyone has pretty much come to expect from the Grey‘s set.
The show handled the events with both seriousness and levity. One sequence in particular stands out as going from funny, to heartbreaking, to a little bit inspiring. It seems all of Seattle Grace questions Meredith’s identification of George, but it’s Callie that has the sad responsibility of confirming, with all of the world watching her grieve alone. Just when it seems that everyone would be paralyzed by their own grief, Webber pretty much kicks the hospital’s collective butt back into gear.
Each of the characters’ reactions to the tragedy was pitch perfect. Callie, and thus Sara Ramirez, was amazing. She loved George as completely as she could, despite the fact that she had moved on. From the scene above, to her facing George’s mother, to the instant she realizes whom she needed to turn to for the help that Mrs. O’Malley demands, it was an incredible performance. I especially liked that last scene, as she manages to subtly play the bitterness she still holds over the dissolution of her marriage without letting it overpower the other emotions at play. A brilliant piece of acting in my eyes.
Some longer running plot arcs were set up as well. I’m concerned about the total tonnage that has been placed on Bailey’s shoulders: her divorce, raising her son Tuck on her own (or should I say William George Bailey Jones), and the loss of one of her students. She doesn’t look like she’s going to make it come episode’s end. There’s also more political turmoil ahead, as forces are at work to remove Webber as Chief of Surgery, with Derek as the potential replacement (whom plays the situation with the savvy and concern of a good friend).
It was a good start for a new season. I recently said that I was looking forward to just the first few episodes back to see how they resolved the finale, but to be frank, I may have been fibbing just a little then, trying to protect the “man card” that I most likely lost quite some time ago. I think Grey’s continues to manage its “soap opera” nature well (whereas Rhimes’ Private Practice has lost that battle for good), and keeps me entertained, and coming back. With Ellen Pompeo, and now Heigel as well, limited this season for various reasons, it will be interesting to see if the show can manage to develop the same type of continuity with other characters that ER did so well.
Thanks Ivey!
What can you say about Owen and Cristina, please? :)
*POST AUTHOR*
Owen and Christina were trying hard to stick to his doctor’s orders of no … intimacy … until Owen was better still.
Okay. Thank you.
So Dr Wyatt told Owen to not being sexually involved with Cristina??!
Do you like Owen and Cristina ?
Thank you Ivy, but I have a few more questions…
Why in the world did his doctor prescribe “no intimacy”? Did they succeed? Will C/O fans be content?
Is the lingerie scene that is in the promo in the first episode that you reviewed?
Fantastic! Can’t wait to see it myself.
Any hint on how Cristina reacts to the news of George’s death?
Thanks for this Ivey! We Cristina and Owen fans get very little spoilers for our couple so anything else you could tell us would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!

Wow, what a lot of Owen/Christina love here!!!
The short answer on why there’s not a lot of spoilers concerning them from most outlets is that they really don’t play a major role in the premiere. They do have scenes, and do have them together, but it really is kinda secondary to everything else that’s going on.
There is a great scene that Hunt has with another character that’s frankly too good to spoil in any way whatsoever.
I haven’t seen the promos for this season, so I can’t speak to whether or not the scene from them was in the premiere, but, I can say that, as a guy, I did enjoy the scene they had together.
Ivy thank you!!!
This is the promo everyone is talking about…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqsP_zFUMco&feature=channel
It shows ALOT of C/O, was any on this in the first part of the SP? If not it must be in the second part. PLEASE respond!
Thank you so much IVEY!! :-)
Thanks so much Ivey! You are our spoiler god! We love you!
Thanks Ivey!
The promo showed Cristina in lingerie and going in for a kiss and then it also showed Cristina and Owen holding hands in the ambulance bay. Do those scenes sound familiar?
*POST AUTHOR*
Thanks to Melissa, I have now seen the aforementioned promo, and I can say that the promo looks like its specifically for the premiere.
I had forgotten about the scene in the ambulance bay, but I will say that the way that particular bit starts and ends is a perfect representation of Owen and Christina.
THANK YOU IVY from the bottom of our C/O hearts!!!!! So even though the majority is sad and about George’s death, we have at least a little C/O to anticipate!
Ivy, You have been so good to us and I don’t mean to pester you but what do you mean by “a perfect representation of Owen and Christina”. I HOPE THAT IS A GOOD THING! Us C/O lovers would take that as a good thing because we think their relationship is as soulmates but just wondering what your take is as a guy?!
Thanks for giving us the scoop! Everyone is talking about Izzie and George, but come on, the goods are Cristina/Owen–right?
Keep us in mind next time you’re teasing for GA–the Coconuts never forget favors! :P
C/O stans are too much and not in a good way. :|
Your review was a great read. I’m really looking forward to the scene between Callie and George’s mother. Any insight into what happens with Alex? He’s one of my favorite characters and I haven’t heard anything about how he deals with Izzie being revived and George dying but any tidbit regarding Alex would be great. Thanks!
I like Mark and Lexie and I hope they continue their storyline in season 6, it seemed to be very open ended in the finale, I suppose for all the other much needed drama.
Thanks for this, it’s the first time I’m on this site, and so glad I clicked! I’m sure will be back again.
Any chance you can “spoil” anything on Meredith & Derek on the SP? I’ve been on the fence about tuning in to the premiere, not happy AT ALL with the path Rhimes led us down to the ultimate post it wedding.
THANK YOU!!!!
I have the same question as “Lisa”,
what do you mean by “a perfect representation of Owen and Christina”?
Also, any Mer/Der info would be appreciated!

Folks, I’m glad you liked the post, but I don’t think I want to spoil everything… Where’s the fun in that?
I will add these observations, though:
– I like it how Christina manages her personal emotions with her work drive in the post-Burke era. (Sorry, hated her and Burke). (I hope I haven’t oversold that moment, because sometimes its just the most incredibly simple things that I like)
– EP is obviously pregnant whereas Meredith is not, and the masking has begun (I do think pink, however, is totally Derrick’s color).
– Alex gets the keys to his new life, literally and figuratively.
That’s about it, folks … I doubt you’ll be able to get much more out of me :)
Thank you Ivy West!!!!
I like the simple things too, that is why I love Cristina/Owen so much! Their “moments” are usually simple and honest!
Thanks for all the scoop, but understand you can’t say too much more!
Thanks again !! Oh…and I read the last page or chapter of a book quite often, and enjoy it all the more LOL!
Pink & Derek could go well :)
Alex… interesting especially with some photos we’ve seen!
Thanks for satisfying my request about an Alex tidbit! I think I know what you mean about Alex being given the keys to his new life. Can’t wait! :)
Thanks for the clues love the O/C news, and the Derek and pink comment is interesting and intriguing, but maybe please answer me this (since you were so generous with Owen and Cristina) do Mer/Der get at least a little more than 30 seconds of screen time?
“with all of the world watching her grieve alone”
Can you “spoil” more on this, with the lack of Calzone in the promos, am I sensing that Callie and Arizona will not be interacting in the SP because its been said Arizona gets her own storyline, so does this mean they will not be in any scenes together. I would think Arizona would want to be there for her girlfriend during this time as she has been during Callie’s coming out to her family. Or is Shonda keeping them apart?
Thank you dear Ivey, can you please tell me the premiere you watched was the first hour, or the whole two hours?
Thanks for the Man Card link. We appreciate any and all links back when something is about “Man Card”.
As far as loosing your Man Card for watching Grey’s: So long as you watched football after every Grey’s episode, you should be alright. Its still pushing it, but your Man Card is not revoked!
Stay Manly My Friend…
Hi and thanks for this, It’s good ot have some lines to read about the show with love !!
I know it’s not, in the USA a fav couple, but I love them together and they made me fall in love with the show again on season5, so without any spoilers ,is there some Mark and Lexie materials on the SP?
Enough with Cristina/Owen! Thank God they’re not a big part of the SP!
What about MerDer? Good or bad? That’s all I want to know.
Thank you.
Are you kidding me? MerDer are old news, honey. If you’re going to hate on C/O, then fine. It won’t change the fact that they’re taking over.
One more C/O question–I hear that they don’t have sex at all the SP while all other couples are going crazy with each other. Do we at least get some sexy scenes?!
What about the main couple? Meredith and Derek, of course.
Any tibits?

I said I wouldn’t share anymore, and at the end of the day, I’m a bit of a fibber, so what do you expect?
– There really wasn’t a considerable amount of time spent on any of the couples (Alex and Izzie more than anything, but that’s more to do with Izzie). I think each got a scene or two, but:
– The focus truly was on how the characters reacted as individuals, and not necessarily as couples.
– The individual reactions were pretty true to character … Would you expect Meredith to run to Derek’s arms to be consoled in this kind of tragedy? Christina to Owen? Lexie to Sloan? If its in their nature, they probably did.
– Layered in nicely, both as a part of the story and in the background, was the reaction of the whole hospital, not just the main characters.
– I especially liked the funeral scene, or the portion of it involving what was left of Bailey’s original students (or, you know, original to us.
– The biggest “thing” that happened going forward was to Webber and Derek, and will be a story that doesn’t necessarily have to involve Meredith (though not excluding her) nicely set up for her pregnancy related break.
FYI loving all the Cristina and Owen news–they’re the hottest couple on this show and the best reason to keep watching GA along with Sara Ramirez.
And regarding your man-cards…how can you possibly worry about getting it revoked? Chicks totally dig it when a guy watches her favorite show with her…being a Grey’s fan ought to be getting you some action big time!
IV – You have fans! Love it. Good review, friend. Looking forward to more in the future. But you used whom instead of who in p 7. You didn’t think I’d let that go, did you? – AD
