Diary of a House Virgin – What do I do when the sixth season premieres?

(Season Two, Episodes 14-16)

The longer I watch these back episodes of House, the more I ask myself this question, “Do I want to skip everything else when the new season starts?” Granted I know I would miss quite a bit, considering the three seasons I would miss. I would eventually see those, but obviously I can choose to wait, or, you know, not. What do you think?

More Wilson in this set is a good thing. I also, obviously — as I talk about the casting all the time — enjoyed the group of guest stars. If only the writers could find a way, more often, to break the pretty consistent formula that is each week’s plot, I’d be a much happier viewer.

“Sex Kills”

Its a guest-star-apooza. We’ve got a Veronica Mars connection (Keri Lynn Pratt), a Buffy connection (Adam Busch), and, well, an everything connection in Greg Grunberg (Alias, Heroes).

Things were kind of twisty in this episode. The team figured out the problem with the first patient fairly quickly. Trying to solve the issues with the heart donor was convention-breaking, to say the least.

I ask for more Wilson, and more Wilson I receive. I always doubted that he would be the type to cheat on his wife, despite House’s protestations (for like, a season and a half now). House not being there to talk to him about things was pretty typical, but then actually being there for him in the final scene worked in a completely different way. House is a good person who cares about his friends, but he’s a lazy — you can also read private — person, insomuch that he doesn’t like doing so publicly (even when publicly could mean a private conversation). But just being there works.

“Clueless”

Hasn’t the bait-and-switch of the teaser been played out? I actually thought, just for a quick second, that the victim might have some kind of odd sympathy for her attacker. But of course, I should have known that it was more likely this was just some kind of kinky sex act gone bad. Like I said, a little too cliched (at least in contemporary “shock” television terms), and disappointing. (Please note, however, that I’m NOT saying that I would have rather enjoyed a story about a woman getting raped. Not at all).

It’s nice to see House’s free-wheeling attitude with his clinic patients jump up and bite him in the rear. I mean, it’s a logical conclusion that if the guy was cheating, he’d never take the prescriptions to his wife. And if he wasn’t cheating, it’s 95% probable that she was. It was good odds for House to play, even if he ended up being wrong. Seriously.

I loved the interchange between Cameron and House in Cuddy’s office. Cameron stood up to him, and the boss found it funny, even though she shut both of them down. The relationship between Cameron and House continues to be one of the more interesting things on the show. I didn’t take to it last season, but the writers have taken a nice tact with it in the second year.

“Safe”

I sometimes worry that Michele Trachtenberg is stuck typecast as a grown-up version of Dawn from Buffy (having seen the pilot for Mercy, I’m a little justified). Sure, you’ve got Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl, but even half of her appearances there have been as the more “reformed” version — or so I’ve heard … because I don’t watch that show. I promise (I’m also a horrible liar). Here, however, she plays a chronically sick sixteen-year-old that is actually kinda normal.

I love coma guy. I don’t even know if they’ve ever called him by that name. I could do the math to figure out who had a coma guy first, Grey‘s or House, but where’s the fun in that?

I think every episode of every television show should have an Otis Redding song in its soundtrack. “That’s How Strong My Love Is” was a little out of place in this episode, but frankly, the song is so great, I didn’t care at all.

I know it’s a little thing, but these parents have been through a lot with their daughter. I doubt they need to have what an intubation is explained to them.

I’m also digging the Odd Couple-esque pairing that House and Wilson living together make.
