I love it when finales live up to expectations. Being Human closed out its six episode first season in dramatic fashion. Mitchell survived his doorstep staking, thanks to ex-lover Josie, who gracefully sacrificed what was left of her terminally ill body. Mitchell clearly felt guilty for feeding on her, but the need to stop the megalomaniac Herrick from achieving world domination took precedent. Even with Mitchell’s revival, things looked bleak for our three’s company flatmates. That is until a slight twist tilted momentum in favor of the good guys.
Annie chose “life” as a ghost over death. Her chance to enter the mysterious portal passed. Whether that was a good move remains to be seen, but her teleportation and telekinesis powers are out of sight, man. She was tossing vamps left and right. Safe to say, it’s best not to trifle with an apparition scorned. I like the pissed off Annie; she was a little too weepy at the beginning. Now she’s gettin’ her ghost on and kickin’ ass. Nice.
Mitchell kinda took a back seat last night, which was refreshing. He’s the most dominant of the three principals and often overshadows the other two. He tried to play the part of martyr by telling George and Annie to skedaddle while he waged war with Herrick. Gotta love those brooding bloodsuckers. However, his pals decided to steal the spotlight.
George embraced his inner doggy and ripped Herrick to tiny bits. The look on Herrick’s face when a hirsute George prepared to pounce was equal parts “holy shit” and “perhaps I’ve underestimated this Lycan’s nerve.” Although, Herrick seemed more than happy to take one for the team. Evidently, his dying was a benefit to the grand scheme. I’m a touch miffed he got iced. He was always good for a sarcastic remark. To wit:
“We’ll smear some blood on us and dance around the fire like cavemen. You know, make a night of it.”
Oh well. It was satisfying to see George lose his baby teeth, so to speak. I agree with his assessment of the situation. By killing Herrick he did what human beings are supposed to do; he put himself ahead of those he loved. It was a truly selfless act on his part. He accepted his condition and became a responsible “person.” In addition, his scratch to Nina’s arm will give him someone to frolic with one night a month.
Overall, I give the first season a big thumbs up. I like the evolution of all three characters and am intrigued to see where the writers take them. Looks like Owen is still in the picture. The decrepit old man at the end reminded me of the creepy relic from Poltergeist II. Finally, who is the Professor? Guess I’ll have to wait until next summer to get my answer. Until then….
