Psych, as always, was stellar last night, and there were abundant quotables and a riotous homage to The Exorcist. It would have made a perfect Halloween episode, in fact.
But the real gem of last night’s episode was the extremely subtle shout-out to The CW’s two-season supernatural show, Reaper. The simple fact that Ray Wise played a devout priest was enough in and of itself, but there was a scene so reminiscent of the antics that Ray Wise’s Reaper Devil played on Sam that my mouth fell open before I started giggling.
When Shawn and Gus and Father Wesley (Wise’s character) were about to go into Lucy’s room to exorcist her, the Father put his hand in and wanted to guys to do a little pre-game football huddle with him. The guys were a little off-put by that, but they went for it when Father Wesley said he wanted to start with a little humor. At the last minute Father Wesley told them it “isn’t a ballgame, Boys” and it was serious business.
He was playing with them, just as I looked forward to The Devil playing with Sam in every episode of Reaper. Ray Wise definitely channeled his inner Devil for that scene, and I loved every second of it.

Shawn: (going over proverbs) If it’s brown, flush it down.
P.S.: I didn’t like the whole xbox placement, granted it was better than subaru in eureka, but still I think they can make it more subtle.

I thought it was very subtle… so subtle, in fact, that I didn’t even get that it was product placement! It was such a typical thing that Shawn would do, it fit so perfectly into the story that I didn’t even flinch.
Well Shawn probably yes, but Henry? I don’t know maybe I’m over-sensitive about product placements, maybe I didn’t expect such a not-very-subtle-one from a clever show like Psych.
p.s.2: I forgot to write last week and in my first post but did anyone notice that in a chase scene last week the psych-mobile was upgraded to a brand new Yaris just for a second?

Actually, I didn’t even realize that it was product placement, as the 360 is probably the most popular console for an American male Shawn’s age (the Wii being most popular overall), Henry being addicted to it at the expense of his health and hygiene, and the game’s graphics looking terrible. It seemed to me that the message was more that nobody should want to buy this console.
My favorite moment in the episode was Shawn complaining about all these young girls posting photos on the internet of them posing cheek-to-cheek, and Gus pointing to the framed picture on Shawn’s desk of the two of them in the exact same pose.
This show makes me and my husband laugh outloud and by the end of the show my cheeks hurt from grinning so much. The writers are great and the delivery of the lines makes the show a real success. Hope Psych is on for a very long time.
What about Shawn’s impression of Gus in the beginning when he was relaying the conversation where Gus convinced him to go to the crime scene? I thought that was hysterical.
