(Season 3, Episodes 10-12)
The serial rapist story line was wrapped up in the last block of episodes of Veronica Mars, and the investigation into the death of the Dean is taking the forefront. Well, it’s at least taking the back burner. I’ve been a little disappointed so far because each of the first nine episodes seemed pretty tight, and each seemed pertinent to the rapist plot. These three episodes seemed much more interested in the case-of-the-week plot than O’Dell’s murder. Hopefully things will turn around.
“Show Me the Monkey”
Veronica searches for a monkey. Could this have been any more of a filler episode? At least it featured a lot of Mac. Her character is grievously underused on this show.
Alright, so I know that the Dean was only killed one episode ago, but I feel like I know who killed him already. It has to be Tim, Professor Landry’s TA, right? Unless the reference to Veronica’s paper is just a red herring, I have to think that it’s Tim, because he and Landry would have been the only people to have read her paper. Landry is far too obvious a choice, and with his history of carrying on with lots of women, I would think he’d be fine with just moving on. It has to be Tim. I’m hoping there is going to be a little more to it than that.
“Poughkeepsie, Tramps, and Thieves”
More Logan and Veronica drama! I’m really hoping that this marks the end of them as a couple. I don’t think I can take any more of this. However, I do realize that the chances of this are low. Oh well.
I’m actually a little surprised that it took until season three for Veronica Mars to tackle the “hooker with a heart of gold” story. The show has covered just about every other cliche up to this point: cults, babies switched at birth, teachers having affairs with students, etc, etc, etc. The show almost always puts a fun and unique spin on things, but I didn’t think they knocked this one out of the park. It was slightly annoying.
“There’s Got to be a Morning After Pill”
So maybe I have things all wrong with my Tim theory. I mean, Veronica broke into his office and hacked into his computer in this episode, and from the looks of things, Tim is also investigating the death of Dean O’Dell. I find it hard to believe that he would bother to fabricate a file on his locked computer in his locked office just to cover his tracks. Maybe he’s just investigating to make sure that he has indeed gotten away with Veronica’s “perfect murder.”
The rest of this episode was okay, with Veronica helping out Tim’s girlfriend to figure out who slipped her some RU-485. It was a great excuse to work Dick into the plot, and he’s always good for a couple laughs.
This isn’t a spoiler at all because it never happens. Mac or Wallace were going to be the “bad guy/gal” in the final several episodes of the season, but because CW cut the number of episodes to 20 that plan had to be thrown out.
Really? I would’ve loved to at least seen some rough scripts or something to illustrate how that would’ve been pulled off, as I can’t imagine either.
And although I’m not gay, any time you can work some more Dick into the situation, it’s always good. I love that they didn’t try and change him much or give him a soft, sensitive side. Even when he apologizes or is hurt, it doesn’t take him long to get back to being Dick.
Yeah I read an interview with the creator whose name escapes me right now. The plan was for 3 main mysteries and the last one would have made Wallace or Mac the person behind whatever it was. He didn’t go into great detail, and I don’t think scripts were ever close to being written.
Rob Thomas.
Again, Oreo, if you ever find the link to that interview, I’d love to read it :)
The case about the missing monkey was not interesting to me at all. I did like the one about the hooker, because it did have some twists that I didn’t see coming, and I really did feel bad for those characters. The conversations that Veronica had with Keith and Logan about the hookers provided some laughs. And any episode that has a lot of Dick Cassablancas is good in my book.
But the introduction of Madison back into the fold was pointless in my opinion. It felt like a contrived way to make Veronica the wounded party, the dumper rather than the dumpee. They were already broken up, why did they have the big romantic reunion only to blow it back up the very next episode? Grrr… I would have much preferred that the first break-up (well, first break up of the 3rd season) stick, and I think I would have been alot happier with the end of Veronica & Logan. Veronica & Logan move onto their most boring relationships in the coming episodes (and considering they dated Duncan & Hannah, that’s saying something).
I think you’ll like the conclusion of the murder mystery… It really does make you think.
*POST AUTHOR*
Yeah, I realized after writing this entry that I didn’t even mention the return of Madison. I guess that was an omission on my part, but I agree with you, it was sort of annoying and pretty pointless.
Mac or Wallace were only supposed to be involved in the last mystery, there was never anything about them being the bad guys.
The next episode is only good for the Logan storyline, but it’s all downhill after that. And some of the upcoming stand-alones? Woof. It felt like the writers lost interest somewhere along the way.
Let’s see the mysteries… murder, mass murder, rape, murder… You think the last mystery was going to be nice?
Yeah the Veronica/Logan relationship reaches Ross and Rachel proportions in season 3 and it did not fit the show at all.
The last two episodes are good, it reminds a bit the season 1 vibe. The storyline with Logan for the next episode is cute but after the other episodes are weak, you can somehow enjoy them thanks to the good guest-star : Paul Rudd and the future Lafayette from True Blood.
Am I really the only one that didn’t like Logan in a Howard Hughes state watching a little girl?
Um… no. I watched the episode last night and thought it was completely ridiculous and cliche.
More on that to come…
